Sometimes the most interesting design solutions come from working with the architecture rather than around it.

For this bathroom in one of my Verbier apartment projects, we chose to centre the double vanity on the window rather than the wall itself, making the snowy Alpine view the focal point of the room.

Everything was carefully designed around this arrangement, from the positioning of the basins to the full-height mirrors framing the window.

The cabinetry and composite stone countertop were made bespoke, allowing us to get the proportions and detailing just right, with bronze fittings adding a subtle contrast to the reclaimed timber.

A rather lovely view to start the day with.

Two sculptural pieces I brought home from the Greek islands this summer.

Clay and bronze.

A detail I particularly love in a bathroom is an undermounted bath with a stone surround. It’s one of the details that makes a bathroom feel truly luxurious.

A standard built-in bath runs the risk of looking quite pedestrian. Undermount it with marble or another beautiful stone and suddenly it feels architectural and beautifully tailored.

And, conveniently, it creates a generous ledge for the things you inevitably want close by — your coffee, candles or a glass of w**e.

Sunny days in my own kitchen. The units and walls are painted Farrow & Ball White Tie, a warm, yellow-based white that instantly brightens this north-facing room. The subtle touch of black pigment in the paint ties in perfectly with the Crittall windows and the black leather legs and fabric accent of the barstools.

Finished with a 1950s Vogue print, bringing a sense of effortless summer days and carefree nonchalance all year round.

In Verbier, but not the typical chalet look.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The scheme started with the client’s hand-painted artwork. Neutral, textured textiles keep it restful, with one of the artwork’s brighter colours picked out in a wool trim on the cushion and bedspread. The headboard was made bespoke to wrap around the corners of the room incorporating switches, and the pleated pendant softens the ceiling line above it. The olive bedside tables, in cane and brass, bring warmth against the pale palette.

My own bathroom ✨

Dreamy neutrals punctuated by black marble and mixed brasses, carried through from the Carrara and brass I used elsewhere in the flat. I always prefer a home to feel like one considered story, rather than a series of disconnected rooms.

North-facing light meant I needed warmth without fighting the cool grey veining in the stone. A painted wall is generally softer and cosier than tile, so I chose Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone. It’s a nuanced taupe with just a whisper of lilac that sits beautifully against the marble.

The black marble vase is one of a pair I found at an antique dealer two decades ago. Truly timeless pieces stay with me, moving from room to room as a home evolves, and ultimately forming the basis of a permanent personal collection.

A clear brief is always welcome, though rarely given, and never required. In this case the client knew exactly what they wanted: black curves, marble-effect top, mirrored back and wall lights. They had mentioned Soho House, so I knew the feeling they were after and translated it into something that belonged to this barn. Mid-century in spirit, with a deliberately tall back bar to celebrate the four-metre pitched ceiling.
Painted black, softened with bronze mirror, and a porcelain top streaked with amber that complements the barn’s warm wood tones and the amber wall lights, which are set against black cork you feel more than see. The curved fluted island is complemented by much slimmer reeding on the cabinet doors that open with antique bronze edge pulls. Rounded bar stools complete it, echoing the curve of the fluting and the sweep of the bar itself. Exactly what the client asked for and I’m told, a little more than they had imagined.
