BAUMBERGER

A 1932 row house on the southern slope of the Uetliberg, transformed in stages between 2024 and 2025. Stripped back to its load-bearing elements: new concrete slab, timber floor structures replacing parts of the old hollow-block decks, kitchen, bathroom and services entirely new. Every level recast, from basement to attic.

A single-flight steel stair runs through the house. Four new roof lights make the attic a fully usable floor. The entrance moves into the ground floor, the former door stays legible as a round window, a cantilevered slab and a projecting canopy mark the new threshold. To the south, a widened window opens the main rooms to the garden.

The language of the existing house is taken up, sharpened in the detail. The interventions read as their own layer.

FRIESENBERG HOUSE

An early 1930s row house on the southern slope of the Uetliberg, transformed for a young family. Stripped back to its load-bearing structure, new kitchen and bathrooms, all installations replaced, the plan recalibrated without giving up the row house typology. Poured terrazzo on the ground floor, the existing strip flooring repaired above. The origin of the house stays legible, the new layers read as their own time.

Stage two under way: attic conversion, dormers, photovoltaics, geothermal borehole, new garden.

MAGNUS WORK SPACE / RAUMTAKT HEAD OFFICE

A former sheet metal workshop on the upper floor of a commercial building in Zurich’s Kreis 4. Deep floor plan, exposed structure, services running open beneath the ceiling. We took this as the starting point and left it visible.

The project is a sequence of few, precise interventions. New built-in elements structure the depth of the plan, holding work areas, project zones and a shared centre for meetings. Tables and furniture stay movable. Drawings and material samples remain out in the open.

Windows turn the workspace towards the street. Since June 2026 this is where we work.

RAUMTAKT has been awarded the iF DESIGN AWARD 2026 in Gold for the project «Weiterbauen im Bestand: Reihenhaus Zürich».

Regrettably, an injury kept me from the stage today, but I am proud that my team, Klodiana and Tanja, represented RAUMTAKT in Berlin.

The jury recognized the strategy of ‘Weiterbauen’ (building upon the existing) as a resource-conscious alternative to replacement, synthesizing embodied energy, baukultur, and contemporary living. Out of approximately 11,000 entries, the project was one of 75 to receive the Gold trophy.

The 1890s row house in Zürich-Binz was reduced to its primary structure and technically reinforced. To stabilize a historic settlement of 24 cm, 19 titanium piles were driven 15 meters deep into the load-bearing ground. This structural intervention enabled a new spatial disposition, utilizing a restrained palette and natural materials to clarify the interior without overforming the building’s identity.

The award confirms a core architectural stance: existing structures are not constraints, but carriers of potential.

RAUMTAKT freut sich, dass das Projekt «Weiterbauen im Bestand: Reihenhaus Zürich» mit dem iF DESIGN AWARD 2026 in Gold ausgezeichnet wurde – einer der bedeutendsten Anerkennungen im internationalen Designdiskurs.

Unter rund 11'000 Einreichungen aus 68 Nationen gehörte das Projekt zu den lediglich 75 Arbeiten, die mit der Gold-Trophäe ausgezeichnet wurden – der höchsten Auszeichnung des Wettbewerbs.

Die Jury würdigte insbesondere den Ansatz des Weiterbauens im Bestand als ressourcenschonende Alternative zum vollständigen Neubau, der graue Energie, Baukultur und Wohnqualität in Einklang bringt.

Das 1890 erstellte Reihenhaus in der Zürich-Binz wurde bis auf die Tragstruktur erneuert und mit 19 Titanpfählen bis in 15 Meter Tiefe in den tragfähigen Untergrund neu gegründet, um ein bereits eingetretenes Setzen von 24 Zentimetern zu stabilisieren. Eine grosszügige Raumorganisation, eine helle Farbpalette und der Einsatz natürlicher Materialien übersetzen den Baukörper in eine zeitgemässe Wohnarchitektur, ohne dessen Identität zu negieren.

Die Auszeichnung bestätigt die Haltung von RAUMTAKT: Bestehende Strukturen sind keine Einschränkung, sondern Potenzialträger.

RAUMTAKT realisiert in Horgen am Zürichsee ein weiteres Wohnprojekt, das im aktuellen Wever & Ducré Update 2025 gezeigt wird. Die eingesetzte Wandaufbau-Leuchte Mirba akzentuiert die klare Architektursprache und sorgt für eine gleichmässige, blendfreie Beleuchtung von Spiegel- und Duschbereich.
