It was such an incredible honor to be invited to talk about AAPI Heritage Month at the Brooklyn Children's Museum and make dumplings with Teresa Priolo on FOX 5 NY yesterday!

Brooklyn is home to one of NYC’s largest Asian communities and BCM is proud to celebrate the borough’s cultural diversity through family programming highlighting traditions, and storytelling. Food is such an important way families share culture across generations, and making dumplings is a fun, hands-on way for kids to learn and connect.

With a retro Canto-Mando playlist, fresh summer rolls, black sesame mahjong tile cookies, and aplenty, we had a blast playing/teaching-learning 🎉 Huge thank you to everyone who braved the ominous downpour and joined us! ☔

I'll be bringing my three gorgeous new MJ sets (2 jelly and 1 dark mode) back to NYC. Hit me up if you want to host a private mahjong night!

Ching Ming Festival 清明節 is a day to perform Confucian filial piety by visiting virtual grounds, tombsweeping, and honouring our ancestors.

Ching Tuen / Qingtuan 青團 is a glutinous rice ball traditionally stuffed with red bean paste and there are also savoury versions. The green dough is made from mugwort leaves symbolizing spring (I used chrysanthemum).

Eating Ching Tuen during Ching Ming Festival is believed to date back to the Zhou dynasty during the Cold Food Festival (two days before Ching Ming) which honoured the death of nobleman Jiè Zǐtuī 介子推. Over time, the customs of the Cold Food Festival merged to be observed on Ching Ming, the 15th day after Spring Equinox.

Spiritual offerings include burning incense (joss-sticks) and silver-leafed paper (spirit money), and sometimes paper replicas of material goods such as cars, clothing, homes, and foods to gift to our ancestors in the afterlife. Then family members take turns, by order of importance, to bow three to nine times.

Today I honor one of the earliest known ancestors bearing my mother's family surname. Ren Bu Qi 任不齊 was one of the 72 disciples of Confucius!

Hard to believe everything that is happening in the world right now and my heart goes out to all the families directly affected by the horrific destruction of life for the sake of power (and "fun"? Wtf) Boycott companies funding the conflicts. Support humanitarian aid. Call your policy makers. Unite in solidarity for peace. Love the people in your life.
