4th in the series of 8 dials that will be mounted on tourbillon watches. The series is about a fun take on the science of gravity, forces and time. Thjs one is based on the laws of Sir Isaac Newton

3rd of 8 in the “Gravitti” set of hand painted art watches, playing with the links between gravity, physics and time. This one, drawing on Isaac Newton’s second law of motion.
The more mass something has, the harder it is to change its motion.

Part of a series of eight watches, “Gravitti”, combining gravity and graffiti.
The graffiti style brings energy, but like time itself, it doesn’t last.
Gravity — the reason tourbillons were invented — is represented through graffiti tags linked to physical theory.

Drawing on Ludwig Boltzmann’s work on entropy.
Over time, systems move toward disorder and lose structure.

Drawing on Galileo Galilei’s principle of relativity.
Motion only makes sense relative to something else, so nothing is truly still. Done in collaboration with my friends at Merkur watches

Resurfaced/MB x Merkur. I have a friendship with a brand who are trying to do interesting and disruptive stuff in the watch world. This includes extremely affordable watches with legendary complications. They are not aiming at elite buyers but are aiming at making high technology accessible. I collaborate with them beaver they give me loads of freedom which is so refreshing but also because I respect the disruptive effect of asking questions about luxury, technical and artistic competence. My friend isn’t professing to be the answer to those questions and it’s super fun to paint a few pieces with them.

I’ve been working on ways to convey the culture of the city of Shanghai through painting on the vintage watches produced by it’s original watch factory. This piece taps into the noir feeling of Shanghai in the early to mid 20th century, where international cultures were mixing, art, fashion and architecture were rapidly evolving and the city had an exotic reputation as the “Paris of the east”. This piece was intended for an exhibition but a Shanghai resident bought it as soon as I posted it, so I’ll need to do something else for the exhibition 🤣

In the watch world there is an extremely famous mechanical component called a tourbillon. It is an extraordinarily beautiful solution to a specific and time bound problem. In 1795, when most persons timekeeping devices were pocket watches, stored in a pocket, then gravity would be pulling in one direction (down) and that would distort the accuracy of the watch. Not to the extent it would change everyone’s lives, but enough to mean that scientifically it was a problem worth solving. The tourbillon is ingenious. But it solves a problem that people do not experience today because technology has already provided other solutions.
These things are complicated to make and expensive. But they are mesmerizing to look at and serve as an example of how human engineering can solve problems with extreme elegance.
It is a very complicated an therefore expensive component to make.
The original solution was by a chap called Breguet, a genuine genius and progenitor of the watch industry. These pieces, painted onto the dials of my friends watch company, Merkur, are a way of celebrating the tourbillon. The idea in the painting draws from the idea of gravity, and showing it tearing through the fabric of space time, through the surface of the watch itself.
I’ve done an extremely small set of pieces with Merkur, who are trying to bring these highly technical watch innovations to people at a very accessible level. Normally each piece is unique. Contact them if you are interested in a piece.

This piece was a commission request; a pen and ink style Chinese pagoda to evoke a sense of peace and serenity. On the right of the dial is an ancient Chinese poem meaning “between a couple, miss you always, like stay together”. The dial, a vintage IWC likely over 55 years old, had some scratches at the top and into the logo, which were folded into the leaves of the tree
