In this episode of *Accidentally on Purpose* ~~ the money BTS 💸 because as much as creativity and playfulness are crucial, so is paying your rent, bills and people working with you (and yourself too, obviously). So I thought I’d share a bit of the reality of running a physical space:
— rent alone represents 32% of the studio expenses, it’s a choice that allowed me to grow my practice, welcome so many people in to learn, host markets and events in the dreamiest of locations… but the financial burden stays the same, in sickness and in health (pottery has been my longest relationship, after all)
— then there’s the VAT, Gewerbesteuer, income tax etc., collected on every booking and handed straight to the Finanzamt (ca. 50% of the profits in total)
— on the upside, revenue has gone up by a lot since opening the studio three years ago (unfortunately balanced out by inflation and the raising costs of materials, equipment etc)
The math hurts, but that’s the reality of freelancing, and that’s also why every class booking, commission and purchase makes such a big difference ~~ and for that I’ll be forever grateful for your support 💞
