Germany
Karl Goetz Medaille
WWI
The Great War
Rare
English Restrike of
one of the most famous Goetz Medals
The Sinking Of The Lusitania
Dated 5. MAY 1915
The original Goetz Medal was dated 5. MAI 1915 in German.
The Sinking of the Lusitania took actually place at May 7th.
Goetz has a little history in misspelling and using wrong dates.
The first version with 5. Mai got somehow the attention of the British and US Navy.
They made a story out of it that the sinking of the Lusitania was a long time planned scheme.
The medal showed the truth about this plot by accident.
In England about 300.000 of these medals were cast. The distinction to the originals is a lower cast quality and the date May instead of Mai.
Finally three versions of this Medal exist.
Goetz original 5. Mai
English. 5.May
And a final version from Goetz with a corrected date 7. Mai.
