Where the letter becomes the dance. Our resident calligrapher Mhanna Mohammad merges Arabic script with the image of the whirling dervish — the Sufi practice of Sema, where spinning becomes a form of prayer.
The idea behind it: every rotation is a form of remembrance, every movement a form of praise. The letters aren’t just decoration around the figure — they’re structural, holding the dervish’s spin inside the line of the script itself, so the calligraphy and the movement become one continuous form.
It’s the thread running through his work: language as devotion, and the human figure woven into it rather than beside it. Sometimes it’s pure script, sometimes — like here — it opens into something more illustrative, but the spiritual weight of the letterform stays central either way.
