An absolutely breathtaking performance by the extraordinary at the opening of the Hamdeli exhibition at MK&G. What you see here is just a small excerpt of a 15-minute performance. In her own words:

„Whether I’m watching videos of dancers in Persian cabaret from the 70s or watching women in the hip-hop scene — the artistic survival strategy of us women is timeless. We step into the light with our bodies, allow ourselves to parody the norm, to mirror it with silliness but also with sensuality, and to make it our own. Our care work, our humour, our body memories are the invisible structures that preserve, transform and pass on dance cultures as a collective. I don’t perform. I’m just playing.“ ❤️

Look closely: no two of these Kelim speak the same dialect. ❤️

Every tribe, every village wove its own visual language — a hexagon lattice here, a row of birds there, a diamond medallion nowhere else. Kelim carry pattern like handwriting.

Art has never known borders. Persian rug art is proof: centuries of dialogue between nomadic tribes, between Persia and its neighbours — patterns wandering across Asia, into Europe, traded and reimagined along the way. A back-and-forth. A shared language.

It gets us every time.
