Julius Böhler in holiday: Congratulations!!!So wonderful to visit the reopened Musée de Cluny, one of our favourites in Paris, and to meet old friends in a new setting. An extraordinary piece in the very first exhibition room: Saint Mary Magdalene, attributed to Jan Borman (mentioned in Leuven, 1489-1502/03). Brussels, around 1480/90, wood (oak), traces of polychromy.

One of my favourites at our stand; makes you travel to distant past: Simone di Bianco (attr. to), active in Venice 1512-1553), Portrait of an Idealised Woman, circa 1530-30, marble with original polychromy, 30x23.5x8.5 cm, in a Tabernacle frame, Italy, Venice, 16th century, modded gesso on a partly gilded wood, 58.4x64.6 cm.

On Good Friday Christians remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for human sins.

Travelling in Italy means always discovering artistic wonders: for example the “Arca Du San Domenico” in the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna. The monument contains the remains of Saint Dominic. The most important Italian artists contributed to this wonder, among them Nicola Pisano, Arnoldo di Cambio, Niccolò dell’Arca, the young Michelangelo and Alfonso Lombardi. For us one of the most beautiful tombs in art.

International Women’s Day

Isn’t she dancing in a wonderful, free and modern way? The model for the so-called “Female Saint of Starnberg” by the Munich court sculptor Ignaz Günther, our contribution to the International Women’s Day. The “bozetto” or working model for the nearly life size sculpture already suggests that the final, haunting composition was one of the artist’s most innovative and poignant figural inventions.

It belongs to Julius Böhler’s notables sales, sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2008 together with Blumka Gallery, New York.

Model for the so-called “Female Saint of Starnberg”, Ignaz Günther (Altmannstein 1725-1775 Munich), c. 1755, Munich, linden wood with pencil marks.
