The lobby of the Hollywood Roosevelt was one of those spaces I wanted to keep looking at.

The old tiled floors, the faded walls, the arches, the palms, all the different lamps and pieces of furniture. Nothing feels overly coordinated or newly perfected. It feels as if the room has been allowed to collect stories.

I think this is what I often miss in interiors that are too finished: the feeling that life has already happened there.

This lobby reminded me that a room doesn’t need to look new to feel relevant. Sometimes its history is exactly what gives it atmosphere.

This morning, I sat alone in the lobby of the Hollywood Roosevelt for a few minutes and simply let the room work on me.

What I noticed was the light.

There are many wall lights, a few table lamps and one large chandelier — but no ceiling spots trying to illuminate the entire room.

And now, sitting in my hotel room, I realise there is no ceiling light here either.

In Germany, I feel we often begin by asking how we can make a whole room bright. But do we really need to?

Here, the light appears where it is needed. The rest of the room is allowed to keep its shadows. And with them, its depth, softness and sense of intimacy.

Maybe good lighting is not about removing every shadow. Maybe it is about creating the right atmosphere for different moments.

I knew about the Hockney Pool before coming to . But knowing about a place and actually being there are two different things.

David Hockney painted the bottom of the pool in 1988. And what I love most about it is that the artwork isn’t protected or separated from everyday life. People swim through it. Sunlight moves across it. Water keeps changing it.

It made me think about how much I love art when it becomes part of a space — not as something added at the end, but as something that changes how the whole place feels.

Art you can swim in.

The rooms we return to.

After time away, familiar spaces often become visible again. We notice the light, the objects we have chosen, what supports us — and what no longer feels quite right.

Perhaps this is one of the quiet qualities of home: it holds our lives while allowing us to see them differently.
