🌿 Stephania suberosa – a truly unique plant
Stephania suberosa is a fascinating houseplant that stands out from most others. It’s especially known for its large, round caudex (the bulb-like base), which often looks like a small stone or a turtle shell sitting in the pot. From this knobby base, thin vines grow upward, giving the plant a sculptural and very decorative look.
🍃 The distinctive leaves
The leaves are round to slightly heart-shaped and grow on long, delicate stems that emerge from the caudex. They are thin and elegant, usually with a beautiful blue-green color and visible veins. The contrast between the rough, woody caudex and the light, floating leaves is part of what makes Stephania suberosa so special.
🍂 When the leaves fall off
It’s completely normal for Stephania suberosa to lose its leaves. The plant naturally goes dormant, often during cooler or darker periods of the year. When this happens, the leaves will yellow, dry out, and eventually fall off.
Don’t worry - the plant isn’t dead!
💡 What to do during dormancy
- Reduce watering significantly
- Keep the plant in a bright and warm spot
- Be patient
When the plant is ready again, the caudex will start producing new vines and fresh leaves.
Stephania suberosa follows its own natural rhythm, which is exactly what makes it such a fascinating plant to grow. 🌱
