Long at the ready: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s sepulchral monument designed by sculptor Bjørn Nørgaard. Located in Sankt Birgittas Chapel in Roskilde Domkirke, it is where her parents, King Frederick IX, Queen Ingrid and close to 40 Danish kings and queens are entombed. Made with glass engraved with the Queen’s and her late husband’s photos, along with materials sourced from Danish territories like Danish granite, Faroese basalt and Greenlandic marble for the three main pillars; it’s design incorporates elements symbolizing the Danish monarchy in general and the Queen’s reign in particular.
Quite obvious yet, for a great many like me who appreciate it deeply, it is comforting to see how great design withstands time as it permeates every aspect and stage of our lives; from birth to death.
