That’s one more for .austria ! Freshly assembled (so fresh there’s still a bit of wax squeeze out left around the tang, because someone forgot to remove it before filming 🙈).

This gyuto was originally forged last year and was intended to feature a twist sumi kurouchi, but the hard layers in the sumi just wouldn’t turn bright in the kurouchi so I kept getting a full black kurouchi. I put it aside and thought it probably wouldn’t see the light again, but I ended up looking at it a few months ago and noticed that it was forged very thick. So I thought it might be thick enough for me to do a full convex grind on it and it was!
So this happy accident has turned into my first full convex kasumi bl@de, fully finished on jnat’s to show off this gorgeous twist sumi!

The lovely block of boxwood burl for this handle was gifted to me by 🙏. I’ve paired it with a micarta top-cap and “pearled” brass spacer.

My tamahagane honyaki, wedge takedown gyuto for Knifeshow Austria 🇦🇹

There’s a lot of human connection and sharing of techniques that went into making this project possible. For which I am deeply grateful 🙏
- From my time in Japan two years ago at Workshop Kurogane with 林信哉 sensei and Jesse Cunningham teaching me how to make the tamahagane in this bl@de from beach sand magnetite.
- Rockchop Knife Co kindly sharing his techniques for etching honyaki, which truly has been a game changer!
- A generous customer gifting me the beautiful block of mulga that went into this handle.
- Simon Krichbaum - StorchenKlinge inspiring me with his wedge takedown construction (Respect to him for making them look so easy, they’re damn hard!)
- and Kaz Ichikawa -jewelry artist- for helping me when I was desperately struggling with the Hido patina on the handle inlays!

I guess you could say this project is in the same spirit as KSA of coming together as makers and sharing our love for the craft.
At least that’s my thoughts.

I can’t wait to show it to you all at KSA very soon!

Sneak peek at the finished tamahagane project for Knifeshow Austria 🇦🇹
This has been my most challenging project to date!
I have learnt a lot in the process of making it and I'm excited to further develop those skills in the future.

Can't wait to properly show it to you all very soon, both on here and at KSA later this month! Where it will be available.

Another one done and dusted, ready for Knifeshow Austria 🇦🇹 very soon!

This one’s a 205x49mm petty in clean wrought iron & 135cr3 san-mai. The wa handle is danish bog oak with lots of texture and a holm oak ferrule.

I have spent yesterday evening and all of today trying and failing to get the hido patina to work on the two side inlay pieces.
I must have quenched and repolished my test piece 30-40 and the patina just kept on being inconsistent or just turning fully black instead of red.
I was just about to give up, but that was until I found and contacted Kaz Ichikawa -jewelry artist- who was kind enough to give me some very helpful feedback. After a few more tests with the knowledge from him, I got a beautiful patina on both of the side inlay pieces.

Can't wait to have this project finished and show it to you all at Knifeshow Austria 🇦🇹 🔥

The Knifeshow Austria 🇦🇹 rush has kicked into full swing! So here's an update of what I've been up to the last few days in a multiple caption format... >

Hollowing out a cavity for my first ever butt-cap inlay and of course it had to be on my hyperbola handle just to make it a bit more complicated😅.

Slowly filing the copper to fit deep enough into the handle bit by bit.

Covering the copper in soot from a candle let's me see where I need to remove material.

This dirty wrought iron santoku sadly won't be going the show because of some delaminations in the wrought iron near the heel (see next slide).

The delamination goes from the heel all the way to the tang and seems deeper than I had first thought when I noticed it earlier in the process.

Progress on the petty is going smooth though and it should be done soon (Currently at 1500 grit).
I'll see if I have time to make a few more bl@des before the show to make up for the few that I've lost along the way.

Can't wait to see all of you nerds at the show😉

Making progress on these two wrought san-mai bl@des.
A deep etched ku & dirty wrought santoku and a clean wrought petty.
The bevels have been established on the stones at 400 grit, ready for further polishing.

These two are of course going to .austria 🤌

That’s #5 for Knifeshow Austria 🇦🇹 done!
A 295mmx48mm sujihiki/gyutohiki in twist suminagashi san-mai and a hyperbola handle in Tasmanian blackwood and hido patinated copper top-cap!
The colours that this hido patina creates in different lighting is completely mesmerising!
Will for sure be doing more of it.

Two handles finished and that means two more twist sumi kn!ves ready for .austria
I’ll post both bl@des soon, but first I’m gonna give you a bit of backstory to these two handles.

The left one is for the gyuto I’ve been working on. It features a curly mulga ferrule and local bog oak that I got from with some beautiful stripes of lighter wood.

The one on the right is going on a bunka. It features a ferrule in rosewood reclaimed from 60-70s antique furniture and highly figured oak that was given to me by when it was leftover from the restoration of Kaleko water mill. The mill was built in the 15th century and is Denmarks oldest water mill.
