I invite you to Saaremaa island this summer - June/July 2026. As a peak preview, I am sharing with you some beautiful shots from Kuressaare town, the capital of Saaremaa.
Also, there is a wonderful exhibition of traditional pockets from this island, all beautifully remade by a local craft master Mareli Rannap, who’s studio we are going to visit during our island, hopping tour. She graduated from Tallinn University in drawing and handicraft in 1991 and from Tartu University Viljandi Academy of Culture with a master's degree in heritage technology in 2018.
Since 2014, Mareli Rannap has been working in her company Saare vilt, which she runs, produces felted and embroidered items. She also organizes folk costume making courses and other heritage culture training in Saaremaa.
In 2018, Mareli Rannap opened the Saaremaa Folk Costume Advisory Board in collaboration with the Saaremaa Museum. There, she organizes advisory days, trainings, and presentations of Saaremaa folk costumes.

I invite you to Ruhnu island this summer - July 2026. As a peak preview, I am sharing with you the happening at the national Museum of Estonia today - a grand performance of Ruhnu wedding was staged to celebrate coastal Swedes in Estonia.
The concert performance was a rare opportunity to experience the wedding traditions in an authentic form.
The Ruhnu Wedding is the result of years of work on researching and reviving Ruhnu music, dance, wedding customs and folk costumes. The Swedes of Ruhnu had a strong tradition of fiddle playing and choral singing, the last traces of which were recorded by the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation in 1938. After the Great Escape of 1944, this tradition was almost completely interrupted. Later found archival materials, recordings and descriptions have provided an opportunity to re-examine, interpret and make the Ruhnu heritage resonate.
The presentation of Ruhnu wedding clothes also carries special meaning – for the first time in over seventy years, the audience will be able to see the wedding clothes of the Ruhnu bride and groom in their full glory.

DAY4: of our WONDERFUL WOOL journey started with a visit to Kärma Farm, which is situated on the banks of the picturesque Tänassilma River. It is a true stronghold of Estonian rural life and traditions. The history of this farm dates back more than three hundred years – the first written records date back to 1717, when the ancestors worked on the land here. Over the centuries, the farm has preserved its authentic farming culture and offered high-quality agricultural products.
Andero Tank, who was awarded the prestigious title of Estonian Beekeeper of the Year in 2024, is dedicated to promoting beekeeping and caring for bees.
In addition to beekeeping, Kärma Farm plays an important role in restoring and maintaining heritage meadows. On the banks of the Tänassilma River, where scrub once spread, there are now spacious and species-rich floodplain meadows that provide habitats for several rare plant and bird species.
Sigrid is a teacher of handicrafts and home economics and a guide to local handicraft circles, contributes to the preservation and transmission of national handicraft traditions. Under her guidance, beautiful and practical handicrafts are made, combining old skills and modern design.
Then we drove to Olustvere, where Eva-Liisa Kriis has moved her weaving museum. It is a wonderful collection of looms and other weaving equipment.
We spent the lunch hour at the magnificent Kirna Manor, enjoying great food, good music and colorful tulip fields.
Our day ended at the Muumioru alpaca farm.
Thank you so much, Birte, Jennifer and Rachel for coming and letting me show you my beautiful home country.
