I have lived in Barcelona for 19 years after spending 18 years in Los Angeles where I worked as a stylist. When I arrived in Spain, the real estate business was undergoing a huge "boom" and very quickly people were doing major remodeling in their newly acquired apartments. Part of the remodeling consisted (and still does) in removing any design characteristic that could remind them of the past...

Walking through the streets of Barcelona, how could I not see the containers of debris filled with these great Modernista floors. I was amazed that anyone could through these beauties away, then sad, mad which is probably what prompted me to act. I decided to start collecting these tiles that piled up seriously and quickly in our apartment. The idea was clear, I was not just going to pile them up but rather give them a second life by making tables, consoles, frames, trivets, etc... Then Mesa Bonita was born : www.mesabonita.es

A. & A. contacted me a few months ago as they were building a kitchen cabinet and were thinking to make it extra special by inserting some tiles in it.
Because hydraulic tiles are rather heavy, I suggested these little clay tiles that are very light and thin.
The first shot is of the designs they chose. I cannot wait to see the finished piece (neither can they might I add!).

A week ago, I received a message from Gabriela telling me that she had seen some pretty colorful tiles at a certain address.
I eventually went to the place and found these bags of unfortunately deliberately broken tiles. My heart once again sank but I was relieved that Joel talked to the workers asking them to take the tiles away from them avoiding their total disappearance.
I could not go empty handed therefore left with the 10 tiles shown here. The kaki green and grey are new for me and I adore them. All tiles are beautiful pieces from Orsola Sola.
Thoughts anyone?

It has taken many years for me to partially clean them. I am almost there. Only these 5 tiles were found and as you will see, it comes with a corner piece that you can see to the left of the console.

Some like them some like them and some like them

Oxidation is extremely time consuming in order to achieve a satisfying result therefore I opted to try a brown type of paint.
I am pretty happy with the result.
Just because some tiles and interior call for that shade, what do you think?
