Thangka Mandala

Thangka Mandala Traditional Art from Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. We are a Buddhist Art gallery specialized in Thangka, Pauba and Mandala

Established in 1979, we are one the most respected Thangka art collectors in Nepal. Our collection is considered to be a unique record of the evolution of Thangka art in Nepal over the last century. We have carefully crafted a rich and healthy relationship with many artists in the region. Recent socio-political and economic events and the devastating earthquakes have crippled the country and creat

ed a decline in opportunities for artist to make a living from their art. Thangka painting is one of the great arts of Asia, dated as far back as the 7th century A.D. considered to be a part of the Abhidharma or “Art of Enlightenment.”
These paintings offer a simple visual insight into Buddhist philosophy and thinking. Depicting spiritual concepts and are filled with myths and traditions that go back two millennia. Used by wandering monks as visual aid to spread dharma or “teaching of the Buddha”. Although the materials used have changed over the course of time, the methods have remained almost intact, passed down from generation to generation.

The 6 armed Mahakala is considered to be one of the most important protectors of the Buddhist doctrine. Said to be the irritated form of the Buddha of Compassion he is here to help all sentient life to overcome misery and suffering.

This style of Thangka is usually used to depict protectors. What we mean by "style" here is the use of Black and Gold to paint a majority of the Thangka. This requires much skill and experience as using gold leaf paint is both expensive and allows little margin for error.

Displayed in our exhibition at Bodhi Fisioterapia in Javea back in 2018 this unique painting of the Green Tara blends both traditional and modern styles and techniques. Commonly known as Pauba Art this unique style of painting originated in Kathmandu and at this time there are few who master this style of painting.

The Green Tara is usually depicted in the "half-lotus" sitting position. was makes Pauba so unique is the freedom and liberties the artist can take when expressing himself. Contrary to Thangka Art where perfection is the goal.

We are slowly gathering our Paubas to make them available for sale online. Please check out our new updated website and give us your feedback !

Maitreya is more often than not painted as a Bodhisattva. This beautiful interpretation uniquely shows him painted as a Buddha which is also accepted. Believed to be the Buddha of the future he will descend when the Buddha Shakyamuni teachings are forgotten.

He is one of the few Buddhas that is painted in the so called seated position, much like when we sit on a chair. This is done to represent that he is ready and able to come to help if and when he is called upon !

We have many more Thangkas and Mandalas, please take the time to check out our website for more beautiful thangkas and more information !

The Green Tara is one of the most sought out deities, closely linked to the history of both Tibet and Nepal. Although more recent Thangkas will picture her with a compassionate glaze - the powerful stare seen in this picture remains the correct iconography.

Believed to be swift to come to the aid of those who seek her, much like a mother coming to the aid of her child. The powerful eyes are symbol that she is also considered a protector as well as infinite compassion for all sentient life.
