This is 50

I’m deeply grateful for another year of life. It turns out you can’t always plan how things will go, and I never imagined I’d be here—navigating so much change—at this stage in my life. But here I am.

I spent my birthday in Madrid with my sisters, doing the things that make me feel myself—dancing, eating incredible food, drinking my favorite wines, wandering through the city, watching the sunset, soaking in art, laughing until I cried, and holding my friends close.

I didn’t expect 50 to be the year I chose myself. For so long, I’ve prioritized others, and it hasn’t always been easy to shift that focus. But I’m learning. And I know that by taking care of me, I’m becoming a better version of myself—not just for me, but for everyone around me.

Here’s to growth, resilience, and whatever comes next. Cheers. 🥂

Thanks to funding from a grant, this past year REAP piloted Roots and Recipes 🥕, an agriculture and culinary entrepreneurship program for high school students. Shabazz High School student interns August and Leola (pictured here) got to explore the full cycle involved in producing and sharing local food. First, Rooted guided them through hands-on experience in the soil at the Madison School Farm and the Shabazz High School Gardener-In-Residence program. Next, August and Leola seasoned their preparation skills in the kitchen with with Chef Sujhey Beisser at FEED (Food Enterprise & Economic Development), and learned how to design and prepare a delicious local food sampling for the Farm to School event at Mendota Elementary School's Fall Fest!

The NIFA (National Institute of Food & Ag) grant gives REAP the opportunity to forge deep connections with MMSD's Shabazz, Capital, and East High Schools through programs like Roots & Recipes. But we couldn't do it without our partners in this journey, who are committed to building a more resilient, equitable food system.

A huge Roots & Recipes THANK YOU to:

Now YOU can join us in that same movement by supporting our efforts during our year-end fundraiser. Thanks to the generous matching grant of $32,000 from our board and donors, your gift will be doubled, making your impact even greater!
