I'm grateful to see my Forest Glow lights featured at the Craft Museum of Finland as part of the exhibition "Curly Birch - The Tree Pressed by the Devil."

Recently I had the chance to visit the exhibition in person, and it was wonderful to see the thoughtful presentation and the story of curly birch brought to life. This remarkable Finnish material, known for its unique grain and durability, has inspired craftspeople and designers for generations.

If you're interested in Finnish design, craftsmanship, or natural materials, I warmly recommend visiting the exhibition. It is open until 30 August 2026.

Traditional Japanese Carpentry in Tokyo

One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Inoue Hamono , a shop specializing in traditional Japanese hand tools for carpentry, which also displayed examples of high-quality furniture.

A visit to the Edo Taitō Traditional Crafts Museum provided an overview of traditional carpentry as well as ceramics, jewellery, and glassmaking. Visits to various traditional wooden buildings, such as temples and shrines, completed my research into traditional woodworking.

Inspiration at Interior Lifestyle Tokyo

The variety of products presented at Interior Lifestyle was impressive, ranging from Western design to traditional and contemporary Japanese design. A few examples of the most inspiring products included wall lights made using traditional techniques. Ise Katagami featured hand-carved floral and ornamental patterns with a dreamy appearance, while Kumiko Zaiku created a more geometric and technical aesthetic. Refined wooden strips were assembled into intricate geometric patterns without the use of a single nail.

hikiZan presented sake vessels made from titanium, combining craftsmanship with precise machining. The exterior featured a rough, distinctive hammered texture, while the interior was precisely finished using milling machines.

There were many other inspiring products on display, including porcelain, wood, leather, and various other materials, showcasing a wide range of techniques and styles.

Highlights from Interior Lifestyle Tokyo: Design, Craftsmanship and New Connections.

Interior Lifestyle Tokyo is a leading international trade fair for interior design and lifestyle products, showcasing upcoming trends and a wide range of offerings. In 2026, around 400 exhibitors from Japan and abroad presented their products to professionals, making the event an important platform for brands looking to enter or expand in the Japanese market.

The fair was a great experience with many inspiring talks and valuable feedback from visitors. Birch bark was a new material for many attendees, who were impressed by its cultural background, origin, and unique appearance, as well as the design language and quality of the products.

I was able to make many new contacts with potential for future collaborations, including interesting connections from the design, product development, and research fields. A big thank you goes to the support team in Japan for setting up the stand, managing logistics, and especially to my interpreter, Manami.
During my trip to Tokyo, I was also able to conduct research on the Japanese design market, traditional Japanese carpentry, and woodworking tools.

I'm excited to be heading to Tokyo next week to present Tansu, the newest addition to my Birch Forest collection.

Inspired by traditional Japanese furniture and crafted from Finnish birch and natural birch bark, Tansu combines practical function with timeless design. The sliding birch bark doors make every piece unique, showcasing the beautiful patterns created by nature.

All pieces are designed and handcrafted in my countryside workshop in Karkkila, Finland, where nature continues to inspire my work every day.
