I made these two stainless steel wood-inlay rings almost four years ago, and now I got them back for some repair work, as the walnut inlay had worn out. This time I stabilized the wood with resin and coated it with a wear-resistant 2K polyurethane. Let’s see how long it lasts this time.

A Kuksa is a traditional Finnish wooden cup. It’s usually made from birch burl or Karelian birch. Making a cup from straight-grained wood is generally a bad idea, as the wood keeps expanding and shrinking with changes in moisture.

I wanted to make a modern composite version of a Kuksa by stabilizing maple in colored resin and then applying a thick coating of clear food-safe epoxy resin on top. It’s much easier to clean than a traditional wooden cup and doesn’t absorb coffee or other beverage flavors. After one year of use, it’s still holding up very nicely.

◈ Ceramic Phase ◈

This huge chef knife is forge welded from stainless steel and titanium. The titanium wraps around a 14C28N stainless core, leaving steel only where it’s needed. This construction reduces overall weight while increasing corrosion resistance.

The blade has been wet-blasted and anodized to achieve a vibrant, matte green finish that looks and feels more like ceramic than metal. The highly wettable surface has a unique feature when oiled or waxed, it gets absorbed very deep into the metal pores, lubricating and making chopping food feel very effortless. This creates a surface that repels food and moisture, and together with the blade’s convex geometry, gives exceptional food release.

The faceted handle is crafted from desert ironwood with a carbon-fiber bolster, reinforced internally with carbon-fiber rods for added strength and stability.

◈ Stainless Damascus Kitchen Knife ◈

This piece was a custom order, forge-welded from AEB-L and RWL-34 stainless steels. It features a slightly convex grind with a strong taper toward the tip. The pattern is a simple mosaic, with calm, wave-like lines flowing gracefully through the blade.

The handle is a layered combination of black acrylic, blue resin, fiberglass, micarta, and carbon fiber pins. I wanted to make the most of my laser engraver with this handle design to create something fresh, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

At first, I thought laser-cutting the parts would simplify the process, but assembling and finishing the handle actually made this my most complex handle build so far. Still, it opened up a lot of exciting new design ideas for my future projects.
