1. The old violin → FALSE
A well-made new violin can easily rival an old one — it often just needs time to open up. The "magic old wood" myth is a hard one to shake, but the maker's hand matters just as much as the wood's age.
2. What a luthier actually does → FALSE
Repair work is part of the job — but I also build instruments entirely by hand, from raw timber to varnish. Two trades under one roof.
3. The price → FALSE
Price reflects time, wood quality and craftsmanship — not a guaranteed sound. A well-made €3,000 instrument can outplay a poorly matched €15,000 one.
4. The damaged instrument → FALSE
Most damage can be repaired: cracks, open seams, pegs, a shifted soundpost... Always worth a proper assessment before replacing.
5. Who becomes a luthier → FALSE
You need a good ear and a love of music, yes, but not concert-level skill.
It's a craft trade first : patience, precision, a passion for wood.
But it is a real real real plus for a violin maker to understand what musicians heard or want for the instrument.
