Trap House, Studio Animal (STUDIO ANIMAL), Madrid

A 148 square metre home and recording studio for trap artist Kaydy Cain, arranged as four linked rooms that each set a different scene. The first, most public room borrows from the street: a folding security grille painted acid yellow curves around the space as a moveable wall. Behind it sit a cobalt blue kitchen against slate blue walls, a sand coloured curved bench and an exposed concrete column.

SILCOHAUS selects this project for yellow taken from the street. A shopfront shutter is the most ordinary object in a city, and here it becomes the room’s main wall. The yellow slides open and shut, so the space changes shape with the day. Blue holds still behind it. The grille does all the moving.

Equilibrium, Ongoing Journey (Ongoing Journey), Belgium, 2026

A sculptural object exploring the balance between volume and emptiness. Defined by intersecting geometric forms and a striking monochrome blue, Equilibrium shifts in appearance depending on the viewing angle, blurring the boundary between functional furniture and sculpture.

SILCOHAUS selects this piece for its bold use of colour and geometric simplicity. Rather than relying on decorative details, the singular blue finish draws attention to the object’s proportions, sharp edges and unexpected intersections. Its ambiguity is what makes it compelling, inviting us to question where design ends and sculpture begins.

Made in Haus: Noka by Studio SILCO (Studio SILCO).

A portable light designed to move between spaces and atmospheres. Crafted in metal with a distinctive conical silhouette, Noka brings together sculptural form and functional lighting.

From warm white to a spectrum of colours, its adjustable light transforms the mood of any setting, indoors or outdoors.

Erika and Willi’s Barn, Piertzovanis Toews (Piertzovanis Toews), Albisheim, Germany

An 18th century barn beside an old mill, converted into a family home largely by its owners on a limited budget. Inside the former hay store, a series of houses within a house are each coded by colour: a raspberry red volume with stepped seating, a sea green kitchen, a pale yellow loggia and a cobalt blue bedroom with a red door frame. Warped oak beams, stone walls and a rough render column stay exposed around them, under a new skylight running the length of the roof.

SILCOHAUS selects this project for colour used as a floor plan. Each room gets its own hue, so you know where you are by what surrounds you. The stained plywood still shows its grain, which keeps the colour close to the old timber above. The barn stays raw and brown. Every new room arrives in a colour of its own.

Weeties Warehouse, spaceagency (spaceagency), Fremantle, Western Australia

Three apartments inside the heritage listed 1930s Weeties Warehouse, combined into one family home. A white spiral stair rises to a mezzanine of bedrooms, where red carpet runs underfoot and red curtains divide the rooms. A circular skylight lined in terracotta and a red barn door above the indoor pool garden repeat the colour against white brick and steel.

SILCOHAUS selects this project for red kept to the soft surfaces. The structure stays white, so the colour arrives only through fabric, carpet and the inside edge of the skylight. Each piece of red marks a threshold: a curtain to draw, a floor to step onto, a door to open. White frames the warehouse. Red tells you where to live in it.

Eda Junior Living, Andreas Martin-Löf Arkitekter (AML/), Knivsta, Sweden

124 compact single person apartments for young people, built from prefabricated concrete units around a private courtyard. A translucent polycarbonate skin wraps the open corridors, so the facade reads as a pale blue veil over the building. Behind it, the corridor walls alternate between oxblood red paint and raw concrete, framed in deep window openings. A galvanised steel spiral stair winds up the concrete end wall beside it.

SILCOHAUS selects this project for red seen through a filter. The polycarbonate softens everything into cool blue and grey, until the openings cut through and the oxblood walls show at full strength. Standard materials do all the work here: concrete, steel, plastic sheet and one colour. The red holds the warmth the facade keeps out.

WYBCx Radio Station, FORMA (FORMA), New Haven, Connecticut

A 1930s residential building at Yale converted into recording spaces for the student radio station WYBCx. On the top floor, a bright red volume wraps ceiling, walls and carpet to mark the live performance zone, set beside a recording studio in matching grey. A deep white skylight brings northern light between the two, and the stairwell below is finished entirely in black.

SILCOHAUS selects this project for red used as a room. The colour runs across every surface, so the performance zone reads as one solid block inside a grey floor. Step out of it and the grey holds just as completely. The edge between them is where the sound starts.

ParkLife, Austin Maynard Architects (Austin Maynard Architects), Brunswick, Melbourne

A 37 home apartment building in Nightingale Village, clad in white insulated steel on the street side and bright sunny yellow where it faces the park. The main stair is a glazed yellow shaft filled with daylight and greenery, and a yellow spiral stair rises through a white interior. The same yellow covers the corridors, balconies, planter boxes and every exposed pipe and conduit.

SILCOHAUS selects this project for yellow used as a shared surface. The stairs show it best. Behind glass, the yellow shaft puts everyday movement on display to the street, and inside the homes a single spiral carries the colour up through white walls. Every pipe and rail takes the same yellow, so the services disappear and the building reads as one warm route from door to roof.
