Tonight La Boulangerie! welcome you for an apéro from 830pm on, to experience the vibrant new body of work of Greek artist Anastasis Ioannou, currently on show.

We sat with Anastasis to discuss the origin of his specific focus on treescapes.

LB!: In your paintings you make sure the viewer can easily count the trees, you never paint a mass of forest, let's say, but a specific number of trees, standing there in line, as if each and every one matters. Do you see it as a display of the power of the one but also of the whole? Does this appeal to our need for unity?

AI: Let's consider a parallelization. Imagine the forest as the information abyss (big data, internet, etc.) and the tree as crystallized knowledge. The humorous title of my exhibition "Can't See the Trees for the Forest" at Roma Gallery in Athens this winter implies exactly that. Knowledge is often lost in the abundance of vast information. My trees are distinct; they are like poles we can grab onto. In our presentation here in Paris, these poles appear only in pairs and clusters, perhaps trying to point out the uncertain fact that we don’t stand alone.

‘Mind Spaces’, is a series of psychological canvas portraits of imaginary tree landscapes, a subject that the artist Anastasis Ioannou has been fervently studying and developing for the past three years.

So much has been said throughout the history of art on the poignant character of Nature, of the resilience of it, of the lament of its absence, of its endless expression and of the interconnectedness with the civilised construct of the human race. The beauty, aesthetic and emotional, of any landscape -from lush to barren- has been central to so many movements and has been focal to artistic expression universally and across time.
