Galerie Stephane Olivier I was born in a garden, the garden of my Grandmother. In Paris, I opened my first boutique dedicated to the flowers from my childhood.

She was the one who started me on my journey with my admiration for the Earth and my sensitivity to materials, shapes and colors. These flowers came from very select growers. I mixed antique garden pieces with these flowers and this became my passion. As a result of this beautiful first experience, I found a shop in the heart of the "Marche aux Puces" (flea market at St Ouen) in 2000. La Petite Maison became my laboratory where I could display French and Scandinavian painted furniture next to Industrial pieces and it would appear as a cabinet of curiosities - always a reflexion of the Universal Garden. Five years later I opened my Left Bank location in the former gallery of Line Vautrin. It is here that I display a melange of many periods and styles. I am constantly trying to achieve a balance with unique objects -that can stand on their own, together with XXth century scandinavian pieces of furniture, vintage and home designed lamps, and creations of my workshop. Frequently I am working with select artists who are a permanent source of inspiration for me and for the gallery. Their work provides a metamorphosis to the gallery-the change is inspiring. My work now, revolves around the world of interior design. I am always searching for new ideas and inspiration as a way of expressing my creativity with the indelible print of nature.

🇫🇷

🇬🇧

Blond walnut, black stringing and ornamental bronze fittings give this large early 18th-century Mazarine chest of drawers its distinctive elegance. Originating from the Rhône Valley in France, it features three drawers with framed panels, gracefully shaped baluster-like sides and feet carved in the form of goat’s hooves. Bronze rosette handles complete its architectural design.

On its top, a collection of late 19th-century Portuguese majolica from Caldas da Rainha introduces an entirely different world. Raised foliage, animals, organic forms and glazes in shades of green, brown and turquoise celebrate nature in all its abundance.

Nearly two centuries apart, carved wood meets modelled ceramics, bringing together the structured elegance of French furniture and the naturalistic imagination of Portuguese pottery.

📏 Table : 125 × 60 × H. 72 cm
📏 Gilet : H. 63 cm · Poitrine 50 cm (à plat)

🇬🇧

A miniature architectural fantasy reminiscent of an Anglo-Norman manor house, with its pitched roofs, elaborate gables and small wire-mesh windows. Dating from the late 19th century, this large cage reflects the period’s fascination with picturesque architecture. Its painted iron and wood, in weathered shades of green and brown, retain their distinctive character.

It stands on a French garden table dating to around 1810, whose oval white marble top contrasts with the Neoclassical cast-iron base.

Beside it, a late 18th-century gentleman’s outfit recalls another form of elegance: the art of embroidery. The white silk waistcoat, circa 1790, features scattered floral motifs and delicate embroidery along its edges, pockets and button fastening. It is displayed with khaki breeches.

At the centre stands an 18th-century Italian Baroque console, its carved and gilded acanthus leaves forming an intricate arrangement of scrolling foliage.

Around it, symmetry and repetition bring the composition together: two large French openwork mahogany planters from around 1900, a pair of pale green cast-iron urns from the late 19th century, and two Genoese chandeliers dating to around 1880, combining Venetian glass beads with crystal drops.

In the background, an Aubusson tapestry extends the botanical decoration of the console into a landscape of trees and birds.

Two figures from an 18th-century church interior.

This pair of Bavarian altar figures, carved in wood in the mid-18th century, retains its beautiful early polychromy. Golds, reds, greens and flesh tones have mellowed over time, revealing in places the wood and successive layers of colour beneath.

Nearly life-size, the two figures echo one another through their gestures and generously carved drapery. Bearded faces, long sculpted hair and open hands give them a remarkably expressive presence centuries after they were made.

The Hare and the Tortoise… the race is already underway.
Along a path bordered by broad leaves, flowers and vegetation from distant latitudes, the tortoise quietly continues on her way. She has already taken the lead. Further behind, the hare still seems convinced that he has plenty of time to catch up… Perched on a fence, a few birds watch the scene, while a heron, standing motionless among the foliage, appears to be following the race too.
Across the five panels of this large French folding screen, La Fontaine’s famous fable comes to life in an unexpected landscape, far removed from the countryside in which we usually imagine the story. The path winds across the panels, leading the eye from one character to the other, under the watchful gaze of these feathered spectators.
A story familiar since childhood, retold in a setting that takes us somewhere else.

In the 18th century, these two carved and polychrome figures formed part of a Bavarian altar, in the Baroque tradition where sculpture, colour and gilding were integral to church interiors. Two centuries and a few journeys later, they now stand on a 19th-century French gateleg table, descended from folding tables designed to change size according to their use.

Beside them, two Swedish chairs, ca. 1800, retain the lines of Nordic Baroque furniture and their old patina. Above, a change of latitude with a large 19th-century Italian chandelier made of glass beads and cut crystals.

A landscape as a backdrop.

An imposing 18th-century French painted canvas almost entirely covers the wall: at its centre, a château emerges through the trees, surrounded by birds and flowers, while a broad border of fruit and foliage frames the landscape like a tapestry.

In front of it, the 19th-century Venetian chest echoes this taste for figurative decoration. Its canted façade is animated throughout with wood marquetry, depicting figures, architecture and scenes of distant inspiration across its drawers.

Two pieces from different periods and origins, brought together by the richness of their decoration and a shared ability to tell a story through furniture and walls.
