Le 1er mai, la fête des sorcières
La nuit du 30 avril au 1er mai est l’une des quatre dates auxquelles se tenaient, dans des traditions païennes bien antérieures au christianisme, les grands sabbats des sorcières. Ces assemblées coupaient à peu près chaque saison en son milieu . Les deux plus importantes étaient le sabbat du 1er mai, fête de Beltaine, et celui du 31 octobre, fête de Samain devenue Halloween. Le premier marquait l’apogée de la renaissance printanière et l’entrée dans l’été, le second celui de la destruction automnale annonçant l’entrée dans l’hiver.
May 1st, the celebration of the witches
The night of the 30th of April to the 1st of May is one of the dates when were held, in pagan traditions much earlier than Christianity, the great sabbath of witches. These assemblies cut each season almost in the middle. The two most important were the Sabbath of May 1st, the Beltaine celebration, and October 31st, the Samain celebration which became Halloween. The first was the culmination of spring rebirth and the beginning of summer, the second that of the fall destruction announcing winter.
