Head of Buddha
Beige sandstone — Northern Wei dynasty, China (386–534 AD)
Height: 28 cm
Provenance: Private Paris collection, acquired before 1945 for C.T. Loo.

This serene Buddha head exemplifies the elegance and spiritual depth of early Chinese Buddhist sculpture, echoing the style of the Yungang Grottoes. The half-closed eyes suggest introspection, while the gentle smile and elongated earlobes symbolize wisdom and compassion. Finely carved details and the stylized ushnisha highlight the divine presence and inner peace of the Enlightened One.

HEAD OF BODHISATTVA
Marble China Tang dynasty (618 - 907)) Dimensions : 29 x 19 x 16 cm Provenance : Private French collection, acquired in the 1970’s.

This head of Bodhisattva illustrates perfectly the renaissance of statuary in China at the beginning of the 7th century. Still influenced by the stylized iconography of the Northern Wei, this refined sculpture embraces the suppleness and purity that characterize Tang dynasty art. The soft and rounded face displays traditional Buddhist attributes; such as the finely sculpted eyes, half-closed as a sign of introspection. The mouth, well-defined and rounded, raises a discreet smile as a sign of Buddha’s serene compassion for humanity, alongside Buddha’s elongated earlobes. The eyebrows in half-moon join to form a fine and well-drawn nose, highlighted with a central urna in relief. The hair is organized in delicate swirls heaped into a chignon and completed with a tiara.
