The city of Rouen certainly has its fair share of absolutely incredible gothic-style churches, however stylistically I can’t help but love this mid-century modern architectural masterpiece, l’église Sainte-Jeanne d’Arc, in the center of ancient Rouen. Designed by architect Louis Arretche in 1969, its sweeping concrete curves are designed to evoke both the flames of Joan of Arc’s ex*****on, and an overturned longship. Many early Christian churches were designed in the shape of an overturned boat. Strong motifs in the windows designs further evoke this concept.
Ironically (at least to me) the church stands on the exact spot where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for heresy in 1431.

While this time in Paris has been nothing less than pivotal, it’s been an experience focused in R&D, and not so much in high-end vacational glamor. Which is what made yesterday’s lunch in the dynamic, eclectic, multi-layered, sophisticated comfortable ambiance of located all the more super special.

So, today was D-Day…; after weeks of anticipation, finally, my moment to call in at the legendary House of Dior gallery and museum. A spectacular visual symphony in hard and soft, light and dark, unparalleled craftsmanship and artistry as only one would expect. Another day, another accidental stumble upon another beyond incredible, sacred, impeccably-preserved, ingeniously-designed historic art collection, museum building and grounds… the Musée de Rodin in Paris’s 7th arrondissement. Or perhaps I’m just over-thinking it… (see last pic).

Err, no - don’t think so! The unspoken no-big-deal ‘everydayness’ around the very existence of these places is what’s just so compelling. It’s called having cultural respect and standards.

Picture it: obscure, semi-oppressed outer-suburban high school, Australia, mid 1980s; it’s Bastille Day, and mainly as a mid-winter morale-booster, the nerds in French class each receive an éclair to mark this important day in French history.

If someone at that time had told young Graham that exactly 40 years later I’d still be celebrating avec éclair, only this time at the local patisserie down the block from my own Paris apartment - well, that would have been a notion completely and utterly beyond even remotely conceivable.

So. Here’s to French National Day, a day that celebrates liberté, égalité, fraternité. I am additionally raising my éclair in honor of this personal moment - a testament to what’s possible. Which I now know is practically anything.
