Born In A Field - Hand weaving

Born In A Field - Hand weaving The benefits to our overall health and creativity are mind blowing. Be still and enjoy the journey.

We practice the heritage craft of traditional handweaving of Donegal Tweed to make fabric, throws, and accessories and aim to provide new ways of relaxing and slowing down our busy lives by passing on our skills and knowledge to others through one to one and group classes, workshops & demonstrations and ultimately we hope to help improve the wellbeing of others through the repetitive rhythm of this age old traditions.

Today we were delighted to have been invited by Jonny & Barbara to attend the amazing launch of the WEAVE programme at the historic Mossley Mill where we got the opportunity to share our love for spinning and weaving with many local community groups and received so much positive feedback.

A special shout out to Elaine and Roisin of The Shed in Antrim for their hard work and encouragement and to all The Shed ladies for the stunning table centres they crocheted and to Mann's at Yarns Cafe for the amazing food and cake 🍰 🎂!

Really looking forward to Saturday 18th October to catch up with the hedge laying competitors, other traders, craft demonstrators and visitors again at the 'All Ireland Hedge Laying Championships 2025' - Always a great day out, a well organised event with a fantastic atmosphere and so many opportunities to learn more about the work of this great organisation - very excited for it to be held at Ballytrim Sawmills in Killyleagh. See you all there! 🪚 🌲

Had a great day at the Heritage Skills Open Day in the charming surroundings of the Barn Museum in Tannaghmore Gardens where we demonstrated some spinning and weaving 🐑

We shared our day with some other local people who are keeping our ancient crafts alive, while stepping back in time at the Barn Museum; which included basketweaving, buttermaking, coppersmithing, leatherworking, woodturning and weaving with and Rosemary Verner.

This event was made possible thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council through the Lurgan Townscape Heritage Scheme and Heritage Places.

Thank you for having us along!

This ‘Varafeldur Wall Hanging’ brings some beautiful aspects of nature & texture from the outdoors in. Also available in a larger size as the most luxurious, soft, cosy and natural mat for your yoga/yoga nidra or simply as a luxurious handwoven alternative to a sheepskin rug. This was such fun to do using locally sourced Romney fleece and represents my take on the varafeldur trade robes/cloaks of Iceland and their long history.
The Varafeldur’s history goes back to the Viking Age when medieval weavers wove these large and heavy textiles using warp-weighted looms. A base cloth of plain weave woollen fabric held the locks of wool, attached during the weaving process using a knotting technique.

Well that’s a wrap……another warp on the loom ready to be threaded through the heddles to set up the pattern and then put through the slots of the reed - so still a few parts of this wonderfully slow process to go before it’s ready to be woven and will transform into some blankets or fabric.
