𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤

This week, Freddie has picked a ‘bulb hole poker thing’… otherwise known as a Bulb Planter! 😂

Autumn is bulb planting season, and if you've got plenty to get into the ground, this little tool can make the job a whole lot easier.

Poking a few holes into fresh compost in a plant pot is easy enough, but when you're planting bulbs directly into garden borders, particularly where the soil is a little more compacted, that's where this tool really comes into its own.

It helps you make planting holes quickly and with less effort, saving you time (and a bit of backache!) when you've got lots of bulbs to plant.

A simple little tool, but one that's well worth having in the shed at this time of year.

October Garden Job #2 - Lawns & Leaves

October is a great time to give your lawn some much-needed TLC - especially after the drought ridden summer we had.

Keep on top of fallen leaves so they don’t sit on the grass, block out light and create damp patches underneath. A quick rake every few days can make a big difference, and those leaves can head straight to the compost heap or be used to make leaf mould.

If your lawn is still growing, give it a final mow or two before winter, keeping the blades slightly higher than you would in summer.

It’s also a good time to aerate compacted areas and scarify where needed, helping improve drainage, remove built-up thatch and give stressed grass the best chance to recover.

A little work now = a much happier lawn come spring.

One of the best things you can do in the garden this October?
Plant now for spring colour later.

October is the perfect time to get spring-flowering bulbs into the ground, including:
• Daffodils
• Crocuses
• Alliums
• Hyacinths
• Tulips (these can also be planted a little later into autumn)

A simple rule of thumb: plant bulbs at around 2–3 times their own depth, with the pointed end facing up, in well-drained soil.

Pop them into borders, pots or containers now.... your future self will thank you when the first colour starts appearing next spring!

You’ll find plenty of spring bulbs in store at Fairways, ready to get planting.
