1950s Original Vintage Travel Poster MONTE CARLO by Jean Gabriel Domergue


An outstanding example of this striking travel poster with artwork designed by Jean Gabriel Domergue.

Jean-Gabriel Domergue (4 March 1889 – 16 November 1962) was a French painter specialising in portraits of Parisian women. Domergue was born in Bordeaux and studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 1911, he was a winner of the Prix de Rome. From the 1920s onward he concentrated on portraits and claimed to be “the inventor of the pin up. He also designed clothes for the couturier Paul Poiret. From 1955 until 1962 he was the curator of the
Musée Jacquemart-André, organising exhibitions of the works of Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Goya and others. Domergue was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur. He died 16 November 1962.

Overall condition is very fine and has been professionally linen backed. Size including the linen backing approx 103 x 68cm and the poster itself 98 x 62.5m.

A pre-Harry Beck map of London’s Underground Railways which was produced five years before the now iconic Harry Beck tube map of 1933. This example designed by EG Pearman, the border and fonts reminiscent of Macdonald Gill’s folding tube maps. Now on show at our little shop in Islington from this coming weekend. £350.
