A very grand façade de lit clos, (front of a closed bed) originating from Bretagne, France.
The panels are onately carved, and a beautiful colour. Symbols of Brittany include the often found ships wheel, marking their maritime heritage, the brass studs used are also a celtic touch.
This bed was probably made to celebrate a marriage, with the heart carvings to symbolise love and the date 1835 possibly being their year of marriage.
These either formed part of a box framed bed, imagine a four poster with sides, sliding doors to the front to allow you to get inside to your bed.
They also were sometimes just simply, as a single facade added to a room to divide the space with the bed placed behind it.
They helped create a warm space to help prevent draughts and keep pit the cold. They also gave a feling of security and also privacy when in smaller houses, many shared the same room.
Today they can make an interesting bed head, possibly set slightly away from the wall with lighting and shelving built in behind.
They are turned into cupboards keeping the sliding doors or maybe add to a childs room to create an amazing magical space for their bed.
Or just as a stunning piece of art for the wall.
