About Wendy

I have been a design professional since 1991, beginning my career at The Fashion Business Centre in Belfast as a clothing designer. That little business evolved into a retail and wholesale shirt business, from which I moved after 10 years to designing military, bullet-proof. I absolutely loved this work. I could see how exciting technical textiles were becoming and I knew that application and good design could make a difference for the end user. Regrettably, design is ultimately neglected in most factories, and understanding this fact paved the way for one of my greatest achievements to date... KANTEQ and now Wendy Smyth.com

Back to my design drive, cultural and historical living has always been a key inspiration for my creativity. I continually observe how trends are created and borne. From a convergence of finance, politics, music, fashion, art and architecture. I enjoy how powerfully fabric and colour define mood, soul, status and style. Furthermore, I appreciate design, artistry and, above all, architecture that responds to its setting - a space that can literally take my breath away.

I am never happier than when my mind is fully focused with an idea and researching schemes for a client (or my own projects). I am a confident colourist and understand the “handle”, construction, and properties of materials. When I approach a new project, with a ‘blank-canvas’, open-minded start position, I am better able to listen, observe and find the clues to successfully navigate and create, with and for my clients, a successful scheme. I would also say that my ability to edit is also a key skill in the overall process.

My design ethos is to efficiently solve problems; sensitively enrich a space; open up possibilities which challenge and honour the integrity of the property; and to deliver rewarding results for the client.
