We love Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Wol and the rest of the crew in Hundred Acre Wood and wanted to mark the 100th anniversary of the book's first publication today.

Winnie the Pooh is often chosen as a theme by parents when decorating a nursery or a child's bedroom (or, indeed, their own)! Equally, we've had clients wanting flooring to fit with Paw Patrol, Dora the Explorer, fairies, wizards, seascapes, jungles, cars, trucks and many more.

We never want to use terminology that our customers won't understand, and we will always try to explain things using everyday phrases. As with any industry, there are terms which are bespoke to us, which is why we explain various terms each month.

This month, it's gripper rods. These are the long pieces of wood, laid at the edge of your carpet with nails sticking upwards to grip the backing of your carpet.

They are very important to prevent movement and allow our fitters to ensure your carpet is stretched to give a smooth and flat surface. They also ensure that the edge of your carpet is tucked out of sight, usually against your skirting boards.

Ripples or unsecured edges can lead to trips and falls, so the gripper rods actually help with safety in your office or home. Having the carpet firmly fixed in place will also reduce friction and creeping, which will help to extend your carpet's lifespan.

You might not know, but in the UK, carpet installations follow BS5325, a British Standard for installing textile floor coverings using gripper rods to provide a stretch fit.

Many of us have furry friends living with us.

Whilst they may prefer the comfort of a luxurious carpet, in the recent heat, we're pretty sure that they will have opted to lie on the cooler tiles or laminate floor if you have it.

Carpets can harbour germs and smells from our pets, and their hair can get trapped in the carpet fibres. Hardwood flooring can easily show claw marks and scratches, and some pet urine can permanently ruin the finish, and even warp planks.

Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), on the other hand, are scratch-resistant and won't get damaged from urine or water bowl spills. Similarly, waterproof laminate or bamboo flooring can be a good alternative. Both stand up to heavy traffic well.

There are many reasons why it pays to use a professional. In flooring, there are a number of pitfalls which can arise if you try to do things yourself. Here are a few:

🔷Mismeasuring or miscalculating or failing to account for angles, alcoves or other odd spaces
🔷Buying flooring from photos online and receiving something that looks entirely different - the wrong shade, an inferior product to what you thought you'd ordered, as you hadn't felt it
🔷Not understanding the product purchased. Is it waterproof? Will it withstand the level of traffic expected? Does it need specialist equipment or adhesives to lay it?
🔷Using the incorrect underlay, meaning you don't have the sound or heat insulation you thought or reducing the lifespan of your floor
🔷Fitting is an art. Trying to do it yourself has a myriad of problems

What happened over the weekend?

🔷Damp weather kept people inside, so they realised they wanted a change of colour, a refresh or they saw the worn bits on their carpet?

🔷The Summer holidays are coming to an end, so people are thinking about sprucing up the house ready for Christmas?

We're not sure, but we came in on Tuesday to lots of messages, and we are doing our best to reply to them all.

No, we're not going to start flying kites outside our showroom or your home when we visit!

Kites, or winders, are the triangular parts of stairs that go around a corner. They are an important part of helping get your stair carpet looking perfect.

It is considered to be one of the hardest parts of a carpet fitter's job, which is why we're so grateful to have such talented fitters on our team.

There are plenty of opportunities for mistakes to be made. The cut is difficult due to the angles. It's hard to stretch the carpet evenly to maintain tension. Inaccurate cutting of the excess may leave fraying or gaps. Ensuring the pile of the carpet runs smoothly is also tricky.

Whether you have a rug on a hardwood floor or a fully fitted carpet, it's important to care for it carefully so that it will last you as long as possible.

Regular vacuuming will help to remove the grits, dust and hairs. There's no set rule as to how often, but it is usually suggested that you vacuum at least twice a week, potentially more often if you have pets.

A DIY or professional steam or low-moisture clean will effectively remove dirt, oils and other residues, allergens and bacteria often embedded deep in the fibres. They can extend the lifespan of your carpet.

If you have any spills on your carpets, try to clean them up as soon as possible. Use a soft cloth to blot the area and then a carpet-safe solution to remove any stain or smell.

To help with general wear and tear, consider using doormats and perhaps introduce a no shoes policy in rooms where you have carpet. This will prevent dirt build up and harsher wear of your carpet.
