I don’t think there could have been a more appropriate textile design to post after today’s absolute scorcher.

This blazing sun design is by the Dutch company Dekoplus and it’s lighting up the garden while the sun falls rapidly across the valley.

Order one to celebrate the arrival of summer! (And a 15% discount if you order two or more items)

I’m not entirely sure when this amazing fabric was made (leaning towards 50s) but I do know how lucky I was to come across it a few months ago.

It’s ‘Bricks’ by Tootal fabrics, a company who were better known for their clothing fabrics, ties, scarves etc. I first came across the fabric s few years ago when I bought some curtains in it, and to my horror the fabric started disintegrating so I quickly stopped making covers out of it.

Thankfully, this time around I have an entire brand new bolt of it and so it’s a tad sturdier. Cushions are ready to order on Etsy now if you want to have this lovely abstract adorning your sofa

This fabric is absolute joy. That is all. ☀️

Post holiday fatigue is insane (possibly because I missed an entire night of sleep on the journey home) but today I knuckled down and managed to get some listings sorted.

These two fabrics are both Dekoplus satins, printed in the most fabulous designs. I’m mortified to say that I’ve had one of them for years and kept getting it out then putting it away as I couldn’t figure out the best way to cut it. The decision’s been made now and not sure why I had to spend half a decade faffing around with it!

Both cushions are listed on Etsy now and there’s a 15% discount on orders if you buy more than one.

Spring Equinox delivered this morning.

Was captivated by the sunrise colours through the trees as I got out of bed, and I just happened to take the photo at exactly the right time.

Just a humble crow, but what a great silhouette!

Big mistake (well nearly). Anyway, make yourself comfortable because this will take some explaining...

Lets first rewind back to August 2023. I had recently acquired some Jonelle fabric dating from the 60s called Finlandia (see second pic) It’s a very bright deep red, abstract and palm tree(ish) and I wondered if it might have been designed by Althea McNish. I had recently found out about the John Lewis Archive Centre and so I emailed them with a photo in the hope that they might be able to identify the fabric for me (Jonelle fabrics never credited the artist on the selvedge). And a few days later I got a reply - it turns out the fabric was actually designed by Nicola Wood in 1965. You can read more about the work of Althea and Nicola on my original post back on 9th August 2023.

Now fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and I pulled the Finlandia fabric out of a box, along with another Jonelle fabric called Jungle Legend (in the first pic here). I have no idea whatsoever where it came from or when I bought it but I had meant to get round to contacting the Archive Centre again in the hope of another ID. The style though told me it was very likely to be Nicola’s work again but thought I would double check before I started cutting it to make cushions.

The reply email popped up yesterday when I was right in the middle of a stressful work day, with various things at home going wrong as well. And my eyes nearly popped out of my head: ‘according to our records, Jungle Legend was designed by Althea McNish and printed by Stead McAlpin in 1965’.

I’m actually quite shocked because I can’t find any record online anywhere of this being associated with Althea. But I guess if designers weren’t credited on the selvedge then this information can be lost forever.

But that’s really where the information ends. They have confirmed that they have the original record of this being her design, but I’m not allowed to see it, nor have a copy of it. They were able to list the other designs she created for the company but they would not welcome a visit as I am not an academic.

A pair of barkcloth favourites from a couple of years ago, still available to buy (and if you want one of each there’s a discount applied if you buy two or more covers!)

I had some rather shocking news earlier today (good shocking, thankfully) and you’ll be pleased to know it involves an unidentified fabric. I’ll be back tomorrow to spill the beans…

This fabric is taunting me!

The photo was taken 5 years ago, back when. I acquired the fabric and although I photographed it I somehow never got around to listing it as a cushion option on Etsy. Every so often I think ‘oops!’ And check and still I haven’t done it.

Tomorrow I will do it! It’s a wonderful fabric - it dates from 1963 and is by Bevis and part of their Royal College of Art collection. And it’s a terrific way to celebrate the first signs of spring 💐

I shall report back as soon as I’ve done it!

It’s taken me a few years (and lack of fabric was not the reason!) but finally the Solstice cushions are back!
The fabric dates from 1961 and it was designed by Cliff Holden at his studio in Sweden for David Whitehead Fabrics.

The first photo was taken in my garden at 5am on May 6 years ago; lockdown was a way of life and moments like this were extra meaningful amidst the chaos and weirdness.

I’ve just realised that Cliff died aged 99 just 19 days before I took that photo. More posts about his work to follow but meanwhile enjoy Solstice and you can order from Etsy if you want to bring a little mid century sunshine into your home ☀️

There were glimpses of spring this weekend - I spent some time de-mossing the lawn until something bit me on the ankle!

This fabric was photographed 5 years ago now but thankfully the curtains are enormous so I’ve still got plenty of fabric. It’s a German barkcloth by Indanthren and has long been a favourite of mine.

You can order covers online and throughout the rest of this month some new fabrics will be appearing in my shop - watch this space!

Tonight I was casually scrolling through some of my older posts and possibly resolved a mystery from a couple of years ago!

I bought the fabric on the left in 2023 and there was no selvedge information apart from the manufacturer, Liberty. So I emailed them and all they could tell me was it was designed in 1960.

A few months later, I posted about some favourite Sanderson fabrics including the one on the right - Bali by Helen Dalby from 1960. I don’t own any but it’s a design I’m very fond of.

It was only tonight I noticed the etch-like lines they both have - and Helen was known to work for Liberty (along with Heals, Edinburgh Weavers, Sanderson and David Whitehead).

What do you think - are these designs the work of one artist?
