One of the biggest misconceptions about starting a flower farm is that if you know how to grow flowers, you know how to grow flowers commercially.

You really, really don’t. 😂 Those two things are VERY different!

Growing 20 cosmos plants in your garden and growing thousands of stems to sell are two completely different things.

And that’s before you get into thinking about irrigation, infrastructure, soil management, succession sowing, harvesting, sales and all the other things that come with growing at scale.

I’ve spent the last two years feeling like I’m starting from scratch all over again. It’s been really frustrating. It’s been expensive. And at times, it’s been bloody hard.

But I’ve also learnt more than I ever thought possible. And even thought it’s been really hard - I’ve loved it. And thank you to all my family and friends as sometimes I’ve been non-existent 🤣🤦‍♀️

I’m sharing this because I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to know what we’re doing, especially when we’re building a business.

The reality? Sometimes you just have to figure it out as you go.

🌱 Half hardy annuals, explained.

If you’ve ever wondered what half hardy actually means, or when you’re supposed to sow them, this one’s for you.

Unlike hardy annuals, these flowers can’t reliably cope with frost, so they need a little more protection when it comes to growing them.

But that doesn’t mean you have to wait until spring to get started.

Some, like snapdragons, can be sown in late summer or autumn and overwintered under cover. Others are better started in spring when there’s more warmth and light.

Getting your sowing times right can make a real difference to how your cutting garden performs next year. 🌸
