LEARNING TO MAKE GEOCACHING WOODIES - part 1

My wife and I found out first woodies whilst geocaching in Prague in 2013, and ever since I’ve been fascinated in trying to replicate these and finding ways of displaying them.

It’s taken me 5 years to get to the stage I’m at now with my woodies being quickly produced at a consistent standard! A journey that has involved a lot of failure and wasted wood as I strive for a decent result for my customers! Up to more recently I was having to spend a lot of time getting them to the correct thickness, levelness, and with artwork nicely in the middle.

When I look back at my first attempts I’m ashamed of some of the results, and the amount of time I had to spend in the production of them. Which all means production of them was losing me money as I tried to keep prices about the same as those that can be bought in Europe.

After several different machine upgrades, various adaptations of jigs, and development of the production process, I’ve got to the stage where fulfilling orders is less stressful and quicker, to the stage I can actually enjoy the making of the woodies as much as the finished results!

Finally, 4th time lucky. A whole, complete tube has arrived unbroken and unused. First arrived as new tube but looked used and was broken. Second arrived sold as new with short positive and negative wires and looked used (internal discolouration from plasma beam and water in the tube,) and the third arrived tinkling and broken in the package thanks to poor handling by Amazon (not the final driver!) Pictures below show it all!

Got to say this driver was excellent too, saying how he'd got it carefully stored in the van, and then would have allowed me to check the tube before leaving! Both these last two amazon drivers work for a courier company, which seem much better than if they are delivered by drivers actually employed directly by Amazon!

I can finally move on with my orders! Just hope that it works fine now.
Now got to attach it and re-align the mirrors to be up and working again.

At least this happened this week while I had some family down time.

After a lovely weekend with family, at last my tube is arriving today so I can get my laser up and running to get orders out. In the meantime it's back to the fret saw to cut out an order of name jigsaws, and finish painting three others to be delivered this week!

It was a day of two halves today.
It started brilliantly with having the opportunity to display my wares in the window of Parlour Made in Beccles. Although I've got a fair coming up at RSPB Minsmere I managed to gather enough stock together to put together a decent display. It includes many of my made to order personalised items which I can't usually put on my shelf in the shop.
The photographs aren't great due to the reflection from the glass but it doesn't look too bad! 😁

Then this afternoon I tried fitting the new laser tube that arrived last week, only to find after wiring and plumbing it in, that the inner tube, usually filled with CO2 was broken and water was flowing into it! Refund and return requested, but in the mean time left I'm awaiting another replacement before I can do anything! 😥

Today I’ve been finishing off an order from the Beccles Allotments and Gardens Association, for emergency information signs for their 12 allotment sites around the town,that will last out in the open.
This two colour material is great as the top colour can be engraved away to show the second colour underneath!

Today was Whitefriars Bowmen's Easter NFAS shoot. Hope every one had a great day?

Another batch of medals made with Gold, Silver and Bronze backgrounds for the winners in each category!
These show only the original green background ones though as I totally forgot to photograph the new ones.

Hope they liked them? They've gone down well in the past.
