Why this is important?
The chemicals currently by law used in our sofas, chairs, beds & other furniture are highly toxic to you, your family, your children, your pets & your friends.
This public consultation isn’t just for businesses but EVERYONE!!
As an upholsterer & teacher I am concerned of the long term effects these chemicals have & there isn’t a need for them.
It’s not proposing that there aren’t proper safety guidelines with furniture in regards to fire but to enable us as upholsterers & you as consumers to be able to have more natural fibre fillings & foams without harmful chemicals.
20% of foam is made from harmful chemicals
40% of most inherently fire retardant fabrics is made up of harmful chemicals, which are unrecyclable.
The change in law would
1. Protect you & everyone you know from harmful chemicals that live with you everyday, that you sleep on & sit on.
2. Stop the loss of vintage furniture & their historical upholstery, without fire labels, that can’t be sold on line, in flea markets or at auction houses, going to incinerators or being totally stripped back.
3. Help stop the 32 million pieces of furniture which have these dangerous chemicals in them having to be burnt every year.
4. Help your local councils across the country save £1/4 BILLION !!!!!a year to deal with this waste.
5. Encourage the circular economy to work better than it is now.
6. Answering ‘Agree’ to all 4 questions will give support to make this change happen.
If you’ve read all of that, thank-you for giving me your time.
