PROVINCE AND BOND (Strong point):
The specimen possesses a luxury bond of vintage leather, in a remarkable condition of preservation. The covers are decorated with a gilded floral border and, in the center, a prestigious Supra Libros:
Blazon: The three lily flowers (fleur-de-lis) of the Royal House of Bourbon (France).
Distinctions: The shield is flanked by the column of the Order of the Holy Spirit (Ordre du Saint-Esprit) and mounted by the closed crown of the kings of France.
Meaning: This mark of possession indicates the volume's belonging to a French royal library (Louis XIII - Louis XIV period), transforming the book from a study object into a piece of historical treasure.
The 1568 edition of Frankfurt (Feyerabend/Corvinus) is recognized for its visual richness, being illustrated by the famous artist Jost Amman.
According to standard bibliographic records (such as those at the National Gallery of Art and rare book databases): 92 large woodcuts are integrated into the text.
These illustrate key scenes in Rome's history (battles, trials, portraits of consuls and legendary figures).
In addition to the 92 narrative scenes, the volume also contains:
1 Monumental Frontispice (on the title page).
Typographic marks (beginning and end of volumes/parts).
Historical initials (capital letters decorated at the beginning of the chapters).
Jost Amman's engravings in this edition are far more refined than previous editions, using advanced perspective techniques and meticulous detail of 16th-century costumes and weapons.
PRESERVATION MOOD:
Interior: The textbook is solid, on dense vintage paper. The frontispice is a masterpiece of German Renaissance wood engraving, presenting a complex architectural frame with allegorical figures. The margins are generous.
Exterior: The skin retains its natural luster; the yellowing of the coat is prominent and well-defined. Prominent nerves on the fringe, richly ornamented with floral motifs (fleuron).
Features: The edges of the pages are treated (marbled/sprayed) for protection and aesthetics.
