The legend of Martenitsi (Мартеници) in Bulgaria is connected to Baba Marta (Grandma March), a mythical old woman who represents the changing moods of early spring.

According to folklore, Baba Marta is sometimes cheerful and sometimes grumpy. When she smiles, the sun shines and spring arrives; when she is angry, the weather turns cold. To please her and welcome spring, people wear **red and white threads** called martenitsi starting on March 1st

The red color symbolizes life and health, while the white represents purity and new beginnings. People wear them until they see the first stork, swallow, or blossoming tree — signs that spring has truly arrived and then tie them on a tree branch for good luck.

Martenitsi are symbols of health, hope, renewal, and the bond between people, often exchanged between family and friends with the wish:
