Rebecca Skeels started her business in 1994 after graduating from the University of Wales. Since 1994, Rebecca’s thirst for knowledge and her passion for sharing has lead her to graduate from Central Saint Martin’s (MA Project by Design) and achieving a PGC in Higher Education from the University for Creative Arts. As a designer maker, Rebecca’s work has exhibited across Europe and in the US and she continues to explore ideas and work collaboratively with likeminded designer makers within different disciplines utilising different materials. In parallel, Rebecca’s enthusiasm to encourage others to learn and to be creative has lead to the position of Subject Leader for Postgraduate courses in Craft at the University for Creative Arts and more recently the Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University. Rebecca’s position as a design maker, leader of craft courses and as an active member of the UK’s craft industry, provides her with a unique perspective on education and requirements for the future of ‘the crafts’. Her interests allow her to continuously develop craft education to enable more inclusive learning experiences which are adaptable to the students’ abilities and her exploration of ‘other’ materials and processes from different craft disciplines provides an extensive view of the industry. Materials are her obsession; bridging her work as a designer maker and her role as an educator. Materials and their related processes determine not only the form and function of an object, but also the object’s interaction with the surrounding environment, connecting with personal memories and associations. The use of materials within Rebecca’s own work can be fun, contradictive, functional and thought provoking. The knowledge of other craft sectors has lead to the exploration of traditional techniques and processes, along with new technologies and digital processes, developing current and future craft practices.

There are only 2 weeks left to express your interest in being part of the Birmingham Jewellery Biennial Event Open Call and Jewellery Making Open Call. Both are amazing opportunities to be part of the inaugural Biennial , reach new customers and wow new visitors.

You do need to fill in a simple form you’ll find at that link to let the Biennial Team know your idea. They are only looking for provisional dates and what your event or workshop ideas is. Don’t worry if you don’t have a venue, they can pair you with a venue at the next stage once you have expressed interest. The deadline 2 November, so don’t miss out. So many thank yous for such a wonderful night. Firstly a massive thank you to The National Association of Jewellers and Ben Massey for the invite to such and amazing event - the NAJ awards.

Thank you to the NAJ team and Matthew Hamilton for the amazing organisation and giving the School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University the opportunity to showcase some of the amazing work from the students on the MA and Pre MA, Jewellery and Related Products, the BA Jewellery and Objects, the HnD and top up Design for Industry Jewellery and Silversmithing, BA Horology, BSc and MSc Gemmology and PhD and Short Courses.

Thank you Kate Thorley for all you help with the selection, prep and set up of the cabinets, I couldn’t do it without you and Sian Hindle for pack up and clear up too. Always so supportive and amazing.

It was so nice to see so my friends, colleagues, work mates, supporters, alumni, current students. And a shame not to get to speak to so many of you too.

So lovely to sit next to Rachel Morrish and Andrew Macgowan, you are wonderful people and made it a lovely meal and chat, let’s do that again.

A massive congratulations to all that were shortlisted, commended and won at the awards. You are all amazing and it was fabulous to witness the celebrations of the amazing industry - my hands still hurt from the enthusiastic clapping I couldn’t control.

Rebecca and Lee were invited to speak Thursday evening at 8pm UK time on a panel discussion for the Argentine Cultural Industries Market (MICA), organised by Roxana Amarilla of the WCC Latin America Region and the National Secretariat of Culture in Buenos Aires.

Rebecca spoke about the Jewellery Quarter and how Birmingham secured its World Craft City status, and Lee promoted the Birmingham Jewellery Biennial and exploring opportunities for future partnership with Argentina’s rich craft and cultural heritage.

The panel included representatives from Paraguay, Chile and Ecuador, and links directly to Buenos Aires’ own Contemporary Jewellery Biennial, with its next edition in 2027.

It’s a brilliant platform to raise BJB’s profile (and we had opportunity to show how great the school of jewellery is and all it does.) on the international stage.

It was a real honour to be asked, and a great sign of how far our WCC connections are now reaching - thank you all that helped with that too!

Huge thank you to the organisers and speakers. We hope to see you all again soon.
