Start with the room, then the person using it.

1700mm × 700mm is the standard UK size, and most fitted bathrooms are built around it. Below that, 1500mm and 1600mm work well in smaller rooms. Above 1800mm suits taller households, if the space allows.

Leave around 700mm of clear floor in front. Enough to stand and dry without turning sideways.
For a proper soak, depth matters more than length. Check water capacity too, a deep bath draws more hot water than some cylinders will give in one go.

With a freestanding bath, check the floor. Filled, with someone in it, the weight is considerable.

By heat output, not by how big it looks on the wall.

Radiators are rated in BTUs - the heat they give out per hour. Start with the room's volume (length, width and height in metres, multiplied together) then a BTU calculator adjusts for everything that loses heat: external walls, window size, room type, whether it sits above an unheated space.

Three things worth knowing. Bathrooms need more per cubic metre than bedrooms. North-facing rooms and large windows want extra headroom, typically 10-20%. And the output can be split, two smaller radiators heat a long room more evenly than one large one.

Then choose a radiator that meets the figure, or sits a little above it.

Earlier this year we supplied the bathroom for a Project 33 build. It was on The One Show on Friday, which is the first time any of it could be shown.

The hard part was done by Project 33 and the trades who gave their time. Ours was the easy bit.

Thank you to Grace and everyone at Project 33 for having us involved. A privilege to see what they do, and good to see it happening on our doorstep.

Most standard bathrooms take two to three weeks to fit.

Roughly: a day or two to strip out. Two to three days for first-fix plumbing and electrics. Plastering, then drying time. Two to four days of tiling. Then second fix: sanitaryware, taps, screens, sealing.

The real start date is set earlier than that. Specify the room, order everything, and have it on site before the fitter arrives.

Delivery is usually one to two days, so ordering rarely sets the pace. The longer wait is normally the fitter's diary.
