Happy Halloween! 🎃

A little vampire cross stitch to mark the occasion. Not particularly scary, but I think he's rather sweet!

Hope you have a lovely Halloween, whether you're out trick-or-treating, handing out sweets or hiding indoors with your stitching!

I do love adding a few beads to embroidery, especially at Christmas! They catch the light beautifully and add a little bit of sparkle without needing any complicated stitches.

And they're much easier to add than you might think.

You'll need a very fine needle that fits through the hole in your bead, then it's just a case of threading the bead onto your needle and securing it with one or two little stitches.

I've used beads in quite a few of my Christmas kits, including this beaded star design. They work particularly well alongside metallic threads and simple embroidered details.

If you've never tried adding beads to embroidery before, don't be put off. It's a really easy technique to learn, and quite satisfying too!

If you're looking to try embroidery on something you already own, can I recommend starting with a pair of jeans?

The fabric is nice and sturdy, so you don't usually need an embroidery hoop, and even a small design can look really effective.

I've added bees, hearts, flowers and little stitched details to jeans and shorts over the years. It's a great way to make something plain a bit more interesting!

Pockets are an obvious place to add embroidery, although you do need to be careful not to stitch through both layers unless you want to sew your pocket shut! I've nearly done that more than once.

Stick-and-stitch patterns are particularly handy for denim, as you can see exactly where your design is going before you start. And if you've got a worn patch or little hole, embroidery can be useful for that too.

I've included a few different ideas in the photos. There's quite a lot you can do with a needle and a bit of thread!

A little Christmas one today. This mini beaded snowflake is only a 3 inch hoop, so it’s a nice small project if you fancy some festive stitching without starting anything huge.

It’s worked in cross stitch, then the little beads are added for a bit of extra texture and sparkle. Everything is included in the kit, so it also makes a nice small gift for someone who likes a project they can finish in a few sittings.

If you've enjoyed trying a bit of visible mending, this might be a nice next project!

My Rose Jumper Patch Kit uses large cross stitches to create a pretty floral design on clothing. It's a lovely way to cover a worn patch or hole, or simply add some embroidery to a plain jumper.

The stitches are bigger than traditional cross stitch, so the finished design has a lovely chunky, textured look.

And despite how detailed the flowers look, you're really just working lots of simple crosses!

I rather like it on a jumper, but it works on bags and other clothing too. A good project if you fancy trying something a bit different with your embroidery.

A little bit of visible mending today! I really like the idea of repairing clothes in a way that adds something interesting, rather than trying to hide the repair.

Denim is particularly good for this. You can use rows of simple running stitches to strengthen worn areas, cover small holes with patches or just add a bit of decoration to an old pair of jeans.

My visible mending stick-and-stitch patterns are designed to make this easier. Just cut out the design you want, stick it onto your fabric and stitch through it. You don't even need an embroidery hoop for many of these projects.

When you've finished, the pattern washes away in water, leaving just your stitches behind.

It's a fun way to give something in your wardrobe a bit more life, and you don't need any of embroidery experience to have a go.

Have you tried laced back stitch? It's a lovely way to add a bit of extra detail and colour to a simple row of back stitch, and it's really easy to do!

Here's how:

1. Start with a neat row of back stitch along your line.
2. Thread your needle with a second colour and bring it up at the start of the row.
3. Slide your needle under each back stitch in turn, weaving the second thread along the line without going through the fabric.
4. Keep the thread fairly loose so it sits neatly around the stitches without pulling the fabric.
5. At the end, take your needle through to the back and secure your thread.

My tip is to use the blunt end of your needle for the lacing, or a tapestry needle if you have one. It's much easier to avoid catching the fabric or splitting your stitches.

It's a fun little stitch to experiment with, especially if you try using two contrasting colours!

🎄 Come and stitch along with me this Christmas!

This December I'm running a Christmas Embroidery Stitch-Along, and I'd love you to join in!

I've designed a special Advent Calendar Embroidery Kit with 24 little Christmas designs, one to stitch each day from 1st to 24th December.

There are gingerbread houses, Christmas puddings, baubles, a little robin and lots more, all stitched in lovely festive colours with a bit of gold sparkle! ✨

I'll be sharing videos, tips and close-ups throughout December to help you with each design, so it's a lovely project to try even if you're fairly new to embroidery.

Each little design takes around 10–20 minutes, and there's absolutely no pressure to keep up. Stitch along each day, catch up at the weekend or just enjoy it whenever you have time.

By Christmas Eve you'll have a finished embroidery hoop to bring out year after year, and hopefully a new Christmas tradition too!

If you fancy joining in, I've tagged the Advent Calendar Embroidery Kit in the photo so you can have a closer look and find out what's included. 🧵

I hope you'll come and stitch with me! ❤️
