Flats are often more susceptible to overheating as window openings can be restricted for safety reasons and if it only has windows on one elevation you can cannot ventilate effectively.

Research by the BBSA on some single aspect flats in London showed without shading it reached an operative temperature (that's the temperature we feel) of 47 degrees. External shading reduced this by between 10-18 degrees and internal shading by 8-13 degrees.
