Flats are often more susceptible to overheating as window openings can be restricted for safety reasons and if it only has windows on one elevation you can cannot ventilate effectively.

Research by the BBSA on some single aspect flats in London showed without shading it reached an operative temperature (that's the temperature we feel) of 47 degrees. External shading reduced this by between 10-18 degrees and internal shading by 8-13 degrees.

Blinds, shutters, and other shading solutions aren’t just about aesthetics, they are an important part of resilient building design. Correctly applied shading can help reduce overheating and improve comfort, whether in homes, offices, classrooms, or retail spaces.

Heatwave research and lived experience remind us that overheating is now a public health and design issue.

Historic homes used shading and ventilation effectively, and today we can do the same with modern solutions.

During a heatwave:
🪟 Close blinds and curtains during peak sun
🌡️ Keep windows shut if outdoor air is hotter than inside
💨 Ventilate smartly in morning and evening

For longer‑term comfort, consider shading solutions designed to reduce solar gain before heat builds up.
