Tower House is Brighton’s finest example of a grand Edwardian House and part of the Fiveways art trail.

In 1902 Architects George Burstow & Sons were commissioned, by a former jeweller to King Edward VII, to design a 12-bedroom house “with a tower, which would offer panoramic views over the surrounding neighbourhood”. The area, on the road to London where there had been extensive tree planting from the 1790s was perfect.

The building was completed within the year and the jeweller moved in with his wife, three daughters, three maids, a cook, a gardener and a chauffeur.

In 1934 the house was sold at auction to another wealthy local family and despite being requisitioned for a time in WW2 it stayed in private ownership until 1988.

In 1999 English Heritage listed Tower House as a nationally important building of special interest.

Today St Vincent De Paul Tower House Support Centre is a place for older people who may be experiencing isolation in Brighton and Hove. There’s a lunch club twice a week and a number of activities held on various days of the week. If you’d like to find out more or work with them as a volunteer, please get in touch with the centre at 265-267 Towergate, London Road, Brighton, BN1 6WT
