"Miyawaki Ayako Retrospective: I saw, I cut, I applied". Japanese/English language edition. Tokyo Station Gallery exhibition catalogue 2025.
This catalogue was published by Heibonsha (Tokyo), where I used to work as an editor. It was actually my very first proper job after graduating from university, and, by a wonderful coincidence, the editor of Miyawaki catalogue happened to be one of my colleagues back then.

Thirty years later, I was both surprised and delighted to discover this unexpected connection again. It felt like a lovely little encounter across time!
Miyawaki Ayako (1905–1995) was a textile artist who worked in post-war Japan. Born in Tokyo in 1905, her creative practice began in her 40s and was entirely self-taught.

Making use of her collection of waste fabrics, Miyawaki depicted still-life images through needlework, especially appliqué. She called her works "Nuno-e", meaning "drawings with cloth."
Miyawaki was an avid writer and left volumes of diaries accompanied by her cloth works and pen drawings that spanned decades. I really hope they will be published one day. Find more

Ewen Brown of Slow Made Goods designs and crafts wooden items at his workshop in Norwich.
A passion for Ewen's practical, thoughtful design and circular economy is in the core of Slow Made Goods. Doing things properly in the line of woodworking tradition, repurposing the material to reduce the waste are in the part of the effort to value quality over speed and quantity.
Naturally, the wooden materials used are sustainably and responsively sourced from the local Norfolk. Each piece is handmade with care, and meant to last for long.

Japanese 4-hole binding journals made by Wazome Kogei, Kyoto.

These beautiful journals are covered with Yuzen silkscreen-printed or Katazome stencil-dyed papers, featuring the maker’s original designs.

These are the last stocks we have to sell, as, very sadly, Wazome Kogei ceased business last year. I have highly appreciated the company’s dedication to producing original Katazome papers in small batches for over 80 years.

Wooden lamps and pedestal bowls by with .persimmons .
Based in Brighton UK, Sarah Lock creates wooden lighting and objects guided by a quiet focus on craftsmanship, material and form. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and her background in fine art, her work balances beauty and utility, bringing warmth and calm to the home.

Working mainly in wood, she shapes each piece with a tactile, considered approach. Her smooth, sculptural finishes are informed by the work of Barbara Hepworth, alongside influences drawn from nature, fashion and film — often sparked by the way lighting and interiors are used in cinema.

Small woven squares by . Cotton x linen.
Many customers have commented that they are almost too beautiful to use as coasters, suggesting they would look equally at home framed and displayed as small pieces of textile art.
These squares -Drift- have been produced to reflect the interesting textures and patina Sarah finds on aged walls, driftwood, fishing nets and old boats close to where she lives by the sea in Hastings. Visit website to learn more. Happy Monday. 🌓

Takehito Ichikawa is a wood artist based in Nagoya, Japan. His practice is rooted in a long engagement with woodworking, following earlier experience in furniture making and traditional Buddhist carpentry.
One of the wood varieties Ichikawa often uses is Spalted Persimmon. Also known as Kurogaki - Black Persimmon, it has dramatic, dark irregular lines, as a result of fungal decay. Spalted persimmon has been regarded as rare and precious wood, and often used for luxury pieces.
