.persimmons is especially delighted to introduce Black Persimmon (Kurogaki)　pieces created by Ichikawa Takehito.
Kurogaki, a rare form of spalted persimmon wood, has been treasured in Japan since ancient times. Highly valued for both its scarcity and its extraordinary grain, it is distinguished by dramatic black markings that create contrasts, swirling patterns, and subtle gradations reminiscent of Japanese sumi-e ink paintings.
Ichikawa's works are not only beautiful; they possess a solemnity and even a sense of spiritual mystery that feels almost religious. Even a small piece such as a ring holder has the power to transform the atmosphere around it. There is an intensity to these works that never grows tiresome—one can look at them every day and still remain captivated.
The things he has seen and experienced, the path he has walked, and the emotions he has felt all find their way into his woodcarvings, the artist says. If that is true, can I be the only one who wishes to see, if only once, the journey that has shaped him?

Takehito Ichikawa is a wood artist based in Nagoya, Japan. His practice is rooted in a long engagement with woodworking, following earlier experience in furniture making and traditional Buddhist carpentry.

Working primarily through turning, he explores the relationship between hard material and fluid form, using wood to express soft curves and refined lines. His approach is shaped by a close attention to form and balance, developed over years of working directly with a variety of wood material.

Ichikawa draws inspiration from the natural world, as well as art, culture and architecture, fusing Eastern/Western, and classical/contemporary visual values, to inform the sculptural clarity and quiet presence of his work. Some of the vases strongly remind us of Greek urns and columns, other items of Buddhist cosmological notion.
