A house becomes a home when every room works for the people living in it. This project was a single long living room that looked fine on paper but didnt work for the family living there, so the brief was simple: create a space we can all be in together.
I always start with the room itself, before colour or furniture, the dimensions, where the light comes in, how it connects to the rest of the house. I knew I needed to make the room feel wider, more open and suitable for the whole family.
Then comes the part that makes it feel like them. A warm palette chosen around their taste, a media wall and bookcase built for the way they actually use the room, and lighting in layers so it works on a dull afternoon as well as a late evening.
Every decision gets weighed against their style, their lifestyle and their budget, so the money goes where it will be most effective.
None of it happens on my own. I'm lucky to work with a really skilled team of trades, and part of my job is to bring everything together: the design, the drawings, the timings, the hundreds of small decisions. That way my clients aren't left juggling any of it.
About six weeks later they had a completely transformed room and more considered than they thought possible when we started. That's what I mean by turning a house into a home.
