Weโ€™ve been keeping a close eye on the Japanese "Yamabiko" design trends this week. Why? Because Bristolโ€™s historic footprints weren't exactly built for modern life (and all our modern "stuff").

The trick to a small space isnโ€™t just decluttering; itโ€™s about hiding the visual bulk.

The Door 5 Tip: If you have a narrow hallway in Southville or a compact kitchen in Redland, use built-in, floor-to-ceiling joinery that matches your wall colour. When the "stuff" disappears into the architecture, the room feels double the size.

Whatโ€™s your biggest "small space" frustration? Letโ€™s solve it in the comments. ๐Ÿ”

Goodbye, sterile whites and "Millennial Grey." While weโ€™ve loved the clean look for years, the trending palettes for 2026 are all about The New Warmth.

Weโ€™re talking deep burgundies, muddy ochres, and rich, dark timbers. Itโ€™s the perfect antidote to a grey West Country winterโ€”creating a space that feels grounded, safe, and soulful.

The Door 5 Tip: You donโ€™t need to repaint the whole house to catch this vibe. Try "colour drenching" your smallest roomโ€”like a downstairs loo or a narrow hallwayโ€”in a bold, earthy tone. It turns a boring transition space into a total "moment."

What colour are you craving right now? Iโ€™m currently dreaming of deep Terracotta. ๐Ÿงฑ

Weโ€™ve all been there. Itโ€™s 6:00 PM on a Tuesday, the Bristol drizzle is hitting the window, and you flick the main switch. Suddenly, your cozy living room feels like a surgical theatre. ๐Ÿฉบ

The global design consensus for 2026? The "Big Light" is officially on probation. Weโ€™re moving toward "Intentional Lighting."

In our local Victorian and Georgian houses, one central bulb just creates harsh shadows in those high corners. Instead, weโ€™re seeing a shift toward layering:

Low-slung pendants over the dining table.

Sculptural floor lamps to anchor a corner.

Task lighting that actually helps you read without squinting.

The Door 5 Tip: If you aren't creating "islands of warmth" with your lighting, youโ€™re missing the easiest way to change how your home feels.

Are you a "Big Light" hater or do you need the brightness? Letโ€™s settle the debate in the comments! โฌ‡๏ธ

Weโ€™ve been quiet on here for a while, but behind the scenes at Door 5, weโ€™ve been busy reimagining what "home" looks like in 2026.

If youโ€™ve lived in Bristol for any amount of time, you know the struggle. We love our Victorian terraces for their soul, their high ceilings, and their historyโ€”but we donโ€™t love the draughts, the awkward "long and thin" kitchen layouts, or that one dark corner under the stairs that seems to swallow light.

At Door 5, we believe design isn't just about making things look "magazine-ready." Itโ€™s about how a space makes you feel when you walk through the door after a rainy day in the city. Itโ€™s about warmth, flow, and making a 19th-century house work for a 21st-century life.

What you can expect from this page:

Real Solutions: How to fix those tricky Bristol floor plans.

Trend Reports: Whatโ€™s actually working (and what weโ€™re leaving behind).

Behind the Scenes: A look at the sketches, the site visits, and the "maker" spirit that drives our work.

Weโ€™re so excited to finally start this conversation with you.

Question for you: Whatโ€™s the one thing about your home that youโ€™d change tomorrow if you could? The lighting? The storage? That "Millennial Grey" wall? Let us know in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡
