A handsome early 19th century gentleman stares out across two centuries 🎨
This accomplished British School portrait dates to around 1805 — note the distinctive gilt shell-button coat, the striped waistcoat, the elaborate lace cravat, and that hand tucked into the waistcoat. That last detail is no accident — it was one of the great conventions of Georgian portraiture, a gesture of studied elegance and calm authority that artists and sitters
alike had favoured for over a century.
