WELL-BEING DAY WORKSHOP

I’m on what looks like a jam packed agenda on Saturday at Halton Mill’s Wellbeing Day. I’m looking forward to running my workshop and attending lots of other workshops too.

Today I’ve been working out what to say and do in my 30 minute slot. My plan is to create a fun, informative and interactive session and those of you that know me know that I could easily fill a whole day with information about design psychology so I will be very careful about what I decide to include in this short session.

This workshop is great timing for me. i’m really looking forward to it.

I’ve had a busy year of change and I can feel plans for the future starting to develop and that includes running more workshops and writing my next book as well as promote ideas from the current book.

I also have been meaning to create an online course but I can’t see my way with that one yet… hopefully I will see through the maze of potential ways to do it and have a plan for that too soon. If anyone has ideas about how to help me do that please get in touch 🤪

Anyhow if you’re local to Lancaster and here on Saturday, buy a ticket and come along. I’d love to see you.

Love
Michelle ☺️

I’m making my brain work today. But working in the cool of the garden 😎 so maybe it’ll balance out?

I’ve read through Susanna’s book from the perspective of the ideal reader and now I’m revisiting it on a more personal basis.

How can I build more authority and scalability around my design personality concept (IP)? What art work will really make it easy to remember and talk about? What are the ah ha moments in the process for clients/ readers? And many other questions!

My book came out 3 years ago this month and although it’s been read and listened to all around the world I really am on a mission to spread the word further.

I’m hoping that Susanna’s book holds the secret to communicating this and another idea that I’ve been holding back.

Wish me luck!! … And if you are looking to share your ‘distinct thinking’ further and through others this book maybe for you.

Shout out to for designing my book and I discovered also designed the cover for Susanna.

Love (and hopefully enlightenment)
Michelle ✨

Yesterday I spent a happy three hours fiddling about with my lounge gallery wall. It’s not quite finished but it’s nearly there. The key is creating asymmetric balance. I find it hard to exactly explain how I do it but fiddling about is a key part of styling. Ask any Stylist!!

At the moment I’m reading a book about why art is good for us. And sitting this morning drinking my coffee and planning my day I thought about all the effort and creativity and love that’s gone into creating the artwork on this wall.

Some of it is mine, most is by others; many of the artists I know personally, some has been joyfully bought (like finding treasure) from vintage markets. This wall is a story of me and my life and tastes.

It is of course curated to fit the fresh spring flower inspired colour scheme. All my natural autumn palette landscape art has gone into the hall. Which means when I decorate the hall it will need to be sympathetic to the lovely landscapes now residing there. But that’s thought is for another day…

Why is art good for us? If you’re interested in this subject I suggest you read ‘art cure’ by Daisy Fancourt. Art can improve health, increase life expectancy, create resilience against diseases like dementia and it seems to me the main theme underlying all these facts is the reduction of stress. I certainly find making and enjoying art to be the most satisfying part of my life.

Human beings have been painting and telling stories for many thousands of years. Often paintings are telling stories. We were drawing on caves long before we settled and started farming. When human beings use their hands and their hearts to create - real beauty is the result.

Many thanks to the following lovely humans whose art is displayed here 🙏🏻

PS my lounge isn’t finished yet… I still have to finish making the cover for my futon on and a
new lampshade and a few other things. Isn’t it a shame that we can’t transform our homes as quickly as the snap on an Instagram post? 😂

I’m pulling together some decor changes atm. Fitting it in around work and other things so it’s taking me awhile 🤪.
Just wanted to show you a couple of vintage finds salt to me for the grand sum of £3 each.

I’m probably going to change the frames. Either paint them a bright colour or add moulding… Something to better set off the beauty of the tapestries. But otherwise they are perfect as they are.
Somebody has put a lot of time and effort into these flower displays and I love them.

Do you have a favourite vintage find? 💖

Decorating progress. Two walls finished today but I have a cold so I’m going slow and slept most of this afternoon.

I’ve realised that taking a couple of weeks (or three) out to decorate my house and little garden and create the right environment (I mainly work from home) will pay me dividends work wise. Because it will boost my mood!

i’m also having a major sort out and some of the things that really fitted in my cottage really don’t fit here so I will either be giving them away or selling them. I might put them on Vinted. What do you think?

Nothing stays the same forever. Making the most of the spring energy!! feeling a bit impatient to get it all done! My to-do list is epic 🤪

PS Instagram suggested I use this Kate Bush audio. I can’t argue with that 🌸

A quick video about how happy I am today!

Even I am surprised at how much a tiny amount of brightly coloured paint has boosted my mood in my own home. I should know better 😂

The environments we spend time in have a significant effect on our mood and well being. So it’s really important to get them right … and to create and spend time in environments that suit your design personality.

Maybe this is your sign to be brave, forget the trends and what your neighbours say. Is it time to create a home environment that really suits you?

Coastal design inspiration

Yesterday I visited Heydays in Exmouth to help my lovely friend celebrate her birthday. The service, atmosphere and food is so good I highly recommend it. But of course I’m posting here to share the gorgeous interior design with you. I found this coastal space to be a lovely example of coastal decor with bleached wood and a neutral colour scheme with subtle textured comfort in the seating and lighting. And the art collection is an exciting visual quirky contrast too.

Upstairs the lofty light/ bleached timber ceilings offered expansive views of the sea and estuary. Yesterday it was so windy it felt wild - watching the adrenaline chasing kite surfers while sipping your cappuccino was exciting; especially when cocooned in the warmth and safety behind the glass. So much more my speed these days.

Every detail of this space has been carefully considered; from the oversized orb ‘feet’ of built in banquets to the quirky lighting and art. I especially liked the bamboo in the ceiling downstairs which is an odd feature to focus on but then that’s what designers love to do. 😂 Reminiscent of storm barriers it will also reduce sound - a too often overlooked design essential for restaurants.

One of the challenges with designing seaside restaurants is that it can easily look too themed.
This place reflects the sea with its colour palette and material use but avoids going too far. Only one beach related piece of art. And definitely no kiss me quick hats!

Annie Sloan Furniture chalk paint makeover details for you. I get asked about this quite a lot. I bought some new boots last week and was chatting to the sales guy about this makeover in the shoe shop. He’s buying a house and is about to inherit it a load of brown furniture And is now feeling a bit happier about it after seeing a photograph of this little cabinet . Furniture and paint conversation conversations can happen literally anywhere!!

Facebook marketplace cheap 60’s veneer cabinet £10
Annie Sloan paint and wax less than £10. I did two coats and used less than 10% of a tin on this.

Paper and glue for bottom shelf about £3

Time taken (not allowing for drying time in between coats) about two hours.

Time fiddling about with which of my glasses and china would go in this cupboard and adding the fairy lights about another two hours 😂

The colour combo and pattern came to me quite easily but afterwards I realised it was definitely influenced by my recent trip to Morocco. I’m really pleased with it. What do you think?

Familiar things…

What makes a house a home? Friendly and familiar things are certainly part of it. I haven’t yet painted a wall in my new house but I am gradually putting together little collections of things that pleases me and deciding what goes where, and then re-deciding, and then going back to the first time etc.

My dining room is now doubling up as a library and art space and today I’ve been enjoying digging out lots of half finished paintings. And wondering what to do with them next…

What familiar things do you have in your home that bring you joy?

In this image there’s a type writer that reminds me to write, a childhood money box that makes me smile and a treasured clown poster for Edinburgh fringe gifted me by . I love the fact that the frame colour is bright yellow. And luckily clowns don’t frighten me!!

The penguin books board is a recent purchase from . Thanks Justin. I think the clown and the penguin are happy wall companions?

I think these cheap IKEA shelves will be getting painted soon. They are too white! 😳 At the moment I’m thinking pink outer and red inners. What would you do?

✨Inspired by the arts and crafts movement✨

I’ve seen a few articles recently extolling the virtue of ‘analogue living’ and getting away from modern technology and especially our phones to take up crocheting, knitting, painting, woodworking and anything that is hands-on craft making.

In time it might be given a name. How about the analogue movement? Many are drawing parallels with the ‘Arts and Crafts movement’. Over 150 years ago this was a radical response to the industrial revolution, mass production and poor quality working conditions and output. Leading figures are well-known names today… William Morris, Charles Voysey and John Ruskin for example.

I have made a personal commitment to do less scrolling and more sketching and painting and I am particularly taken by fauvism at the moment. But that’s for another post.

Last weekend I visited in the Lake District; a brilliant example of an arts and craft house. Many of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement had trained as architects and Baillie Scott is a great example of an architect who was involved in every aspect of Blackwell including intricately carved wood and plaster Interiors and internal stained glass windows.

I now live near this wonderful building and can see myself visiting on a regular basis especially to sit in the white room window nook and gaze out at the Lakeland Hills.

Where do you go for inspiration?
