Today reminded me that flowers are sometimes about so much more than flowers. ❤️

An older gentleman came into the shop today to buy a small bouquet.

While we were talking, he opened up to me about losing his wife not too long ago, and how incredibly lonely he has been feeling since.

I didn’t really know what to say, so I simply stood there and listened.

And sometimes, I think, that’s exactly what someone needs.

Not advice.
Not somebody trying to fix things.
Just someone willing to listen.

He probably came into the shop expecting to buy a small bunch of flowers and leave a few minutes later. But instead, he shared a little piece of his life with a complete stranger.

After he left, I found myself feeling incredibly emotional.

I’ve suffered with depression myself, so I know that feeling of struggling inside while the world around you carries on as normal. And today really made me think about just how many people are walking around feeling lonely, even when we might never know it.

Loneliness can affect anyone.

An elderly person who has lost their partner.
Someone who lives alone.
Someone going through a difficult time.
Even someone surrounded by people who still feels completely alone.

So perhaps today is a little reminder to check in on someone.

Call your mum or dad.
Message an old friend.
Knock on a neighbour’s door.
Ask someone how they really are — and, importantly, take the time to listen to the answer.

You never know what someone might be carrying behind a smile.

And to the gentleman who came into my shop today, if you happen to read this, I hope those flowers brought you a little bit of comfort. 🌷

Sometimes the kindest thing we can give someone costs absolutely nothing — our time, our ears and a little bit of kindness. ❤️
