I had the opportunity recently of speaking at a W.I meeting to a wonderful audience regarding my passion for crafting with wood, both carving and wood turning.

The interaction was great with many questions regarding what inspires me to create and how my journey began.

If I encouraged anyone to try carving in wood then that was an achievement in itself!

I would like to thank Sarah for putting me forward to the institute to talk and Jacquie Dean from the W.I for being so welcoming and helpful at the event.

Thankyou to all who came to the event, i hope I gave you insite to the joy of creating in wood.

Time and tide wait for no man…so im wasting no time in pushing this project onwards every moment I have available! So, if you followed the two previous posts you will see I have now progressed and carved the bar to the left of the fireplace, particularly pleased getting the stools in position but also small details like tankards hanging from the beam above the bar and keg of ale also at the back of the bar! So, now roughed out it can be tidied up and prepped to shape the outside of the container-its going to me tricky but exciting-stay tuned-Thankyou-N

A small window in my work schedule has allowed me to push this project on a little further. Today I managed to carve the J. R.R.Tolkien logo to the inside of Bilbos door, i really enjoyed doing this part and I will gold guild this, I think it will look quite special and give it that added touch. I also managed to rough out the right hand side of the hearth on the inner section so now there are tables and chairs and the window as in The Green Dragon in Hobbiton. I will tidy and sharpen that section in due course, I am now ready to carve a section of the bar on the left hand side of the hearth. I have added some videos of me carving these sections for you to see. I hope you enjoy and continue to follow me on this journey!

Hi there! Well, once upon a time I worked for HarperCollinsPublishers and lovers of the Lord of the Rings will know this company publish J.R.R Tolkiens works. It was a very productive and fascinating time working on the L.O.R titles and has stayed with me ever since.
Skip forward many years and I am now on the final year of a wood turning apprentiship ‘The Artisan’ stage. This project was to make a water flask, and as soon as I read the brief my mind began firing on all cylinders with possibilities and if you have watched the video to the end you will see my initial sketch and idea. The door is Bilbos home entrance from The Fellowship of the Ring in The Shire, and upon opening it there is the hearth and still to be carved a section of the bar and seating inside The Green Dragon bar. The flask will be filled with whisky and im hoping to backlight it to give the impression of a fire or the belly of the dragon. The flask stopper will be Smaugs head which along with many other details will be carved by me.
There is so much more to be carved and wood turned and I will keep posting as I progress. Im even proud to say I turned the brass door nob…on my wood lathe.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have on the projects 👍

Thankyou-Nik

There's something special about letting the timber guide your carving process. The grain of the Sapele wood seemed to lend itself perfectly to these feline friends, with their subtle colour difference adding to their charm. I'd love your feedback! More animal carvings are on the way, so please let me know if there's a specific piece you'd like me to create.
